Bookmakers Say Ice Will Xot Leave the Lakes for Another Fifteen Days. Tworealdays of sprinir weather have Set the anglers to talking of the opening of the fishing season anil'""the book makers arc fixing the date when the ice will leave the lakes and conditions will be favorable for fishing as at least fifteen clays distant. Next Sunday will he the first day of the open season on wall eyed pike and all other speeios of the tinny tribe to be found in tbe lakes in this vicinity with the ex ception of black, gray and Os wego bass, wbielt will not be ripe until May 30. There will be little iishing far the next two weeks at least, as there is still a good body of ice in the lakes and it will require all of that time for it to disappear. Some of the finest fishing in the northwest may be bad in Lake Bemidji and Lake Irvine, Wall eyed pike abound, but there are no black bass in the lake accord ing to general authority which is, however, disputed by many old time fishermen, who say that black bass may be taken in cer tain sections of the lake. Excellent bass fishing may be had at any number ofinlanddakes in this vicinity. The only Iishing going on now is spearing, which is being conducted with good success in the open water on the Mississippi. Suckers, pickerel and red horse are running and -will be for the next ten or fifteen days. The nights and days now are particularly favorable to large catches as the weather is fight and a new moon prevails, a cir cumstance that is taken much stock of by the authorities on fishing. Spearing pickerel, bull heads, suckers, carp and red horse is not contrary to law, but the muskallonge which runs with the other fish at this time can not legally be taken. A party of local sportsmen are talking of establishing a camp on Bass lake, which will be main tained during all of the summer and where the black bass anglers can have headquarters. Several private parties will establish camps at nearby lakes in about two-weeks and there will evident ly be no lack? of places to go to pursue the sport with the great est comfort and assurance of success. The, state fish commission is particularly anxious to secure some fine Specimens of muskal Ionge "for the St Louis exposi tion exhibit and Executive Agent Fullerton will be pleased to have all specimens of muskallonge that are exceptional saved for the exhibit. The organization of a fish club is one of a number oi things which the fishermen plan and a prise is" to be offered for the largest specimeii: of -rw^thVeyed pike taken with a rod and reel in either Lake Bemidji or Lake Irvine. A 'urge number of tourists are expected to visit Bemidji this summer and--they will find the local boatmen, better equipped than ever to give them equip ment and information as to-the best fishing grounds in this vi cinity.
