Dan Rose arrived in the city from Northome this morning and left this afternoon for Cass Lake, where he will transact business at the U. S. land office in that city. Mr. and Mrs. A. Markusen yesterday afternoon entertained at a 5 'clock dinner. Plates were laid for eight. Games were played after the conclusion of the meal and an enjoyable evening was spent. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Piummer, former residents of Bemidji, are in the city from Regina, Saskat chewan, where they are now located. Whittle arrived in the city this morning from Grand Rapids to take up their future residence here. Mrs. Whittle has recently brought an action for damages in the sum of $12,000 against the village of Grand Rapids for injur ies sustained by falling over a plow placed in front of a hard ware store for display. John Walton, a logger conduct ing camps near Kelliher, is in the city today on his way to Peyton, Iowa, where he will spend a few days visiting relatives and friends. William Spellman, formerly employed at the Markham hotel in this city but who is now at the Crookston at Crookston, spent yesterday in the city renewing acquaintances. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Blocker were surprised by a large num ber of friends at their home Sat urday night, where a farevell party was given to Mr. and Mrs, Blocker. About sixty persons were present and farewell ad dresses were delivered by Rev. E. M. Peterson and Judge Skin vik. Refreshments were served after which Mr. and Mrs. Block er were presented with a valuable present. Judge Utlev and-brother, Win dall of Northome arrived in the city this morning and left this afternoon for Cass Lake, where they will make final proof upon their homesteads in Itasca county. Through some inadventure the Pioneer a few days ago stated that rs. A. B. Daggett had left for the twin cities and expected before her return to yisit her son at Fort Monroe, Va. The lady who left was Mrs. D. Hanger. A. A. D. Rahn arrived in the city Saturday from the west, where he has spent several days in the interests of the Shevlin Carpenter company. Mr. Rahn will remain in Bemidji for a short time looking after business for the company in this vicinity. County Treasurer French and C. W. Jewett passed through the city this morning enroute to their hunting camp near Guthrie from Blackduck. where they spent Sunday. Mr, French state that they have already killed two deer but that they would spend a few more days in an effort to secure all the law allows. Nine recruits were yesterday shipped by Private Abram of the local marine office to Mare Is land, Cal., where they will be drilled preparatory to joining the seryice in the Peihppine Islands. One of the recruits was John Burke, who was a member of the Bemidji base ball team last sea son. Assistant Postmaster^ D. F. Polk of St. Paul and E. E. Mc Donald of this city returned Sat urday night from Shotley town ship, where they have spent some time hunting. The hunt was a successful one, the party of which they were members se curing three deer. Mr. Polk left this morning for his home at St. Paul. H. R. McDonald Dead. H. R. McDonald of Kelliher, well known in this city, died yes terday at a hospital in Crookston after an illness of several weeks. Jubilee Singers Good. The Presbyterian church was packed to its capacity last night with people who came to hear the Jubilee singers, who render ed a program at the church. The program was excellent and high ly pleased those who heard it.^ Oliver W. Stewart Coming. Oliver W. The man killed by an M. & I. work train north of Northome Friday was John Kolbe, a home steader who lives near* Margie. The remains were taken to Northome, where they are being held to await the dicision of the county coroner as to whether or not an inquest is necessary.
