Every president has a big stick.
With Taft it's Ballinger.
Bemidji business men appear in
clined to ditch the ditch debt.
Anyhow that St. Paul batker who
is at the workhouse for speeding his
automobile isn't taking in any bad
money.
Now if that smoke had come from
the direction of Danville, Illinois,
there would be no question as to
what caused it.
Congressman Volstead apparently
thinks Speaker Cannon can be
elected to only one executive office
president of the "in Bad" club.
Move to amend, "Where Art Thou
Going, Alice" by substituting for
"where" the word "What" and
"going" for the the word "smoking."
James T. McCleary has announced
that he will not enter the race as a
Republican candidate for .congress
in the second district Mr. Mc
Cleary apparently doesn't care to
run just for the fun of hearing his
feet make a noise.
THE FOREST FIRES.
Rehse in the St, Paul Pioneer
Press has a graphic cartoon on the
forest fires now burning in Idaho
and Montana. His picture i shows
in the background an ocean of
flame and smoke greedily eating
away great trees while (the back
ground is made up of the smoulder
ing stumps which form the wake of
the fiery monster ahead. Beneath
the cartoon are these .words, 'lis
This to Be the Solution of the
Forestry Problem." And twhen it
becomes known that a thousand
men have sacrificed themselves lin
the fire zone, to say nothing of the
destruction of property and pother
lives, the artist's picture becomes
dramatic in the extreme.
WH O WAS THE REAL ASSASSIN?
Providence, or the doctors,*Appear
to have spared the life of Mayor
Gaynor and a gracions republici is
sending her thanks heavenward.
What the future may unfold for the
wounded mayor of New York 4s an
interesting mystery. Whether
destiny directs his steps toward,the
White House or keeps him for, more
years of usefulness tin the nation's
metropolis doesn't need to concern
the average citizen for his 'ringing
have aroused the country and every
where there is an effort to follow
the high standard of municipal ex
cellence which he has established in
his home city.
With the recovery, therefore, of
Mayor Gaynor, it perhaps is well
to note the circumstances which
lead np to the shooting. It is a
tragedy strangely similar to.the
one which resulted in the death of
McKinley. Following the election
of Gaynor as mayor in 1909 by a
plurality of 73,074, he has "repeat
edly been denounced in a sen
sational way by the Hearst news
in New York. For weeks
these papers were severe and at
times unjust in their criticism.
It was olose on the heels of
these bitter.attacks by the Hearst
sheets that Mayor Gaynor was
shot down by a week minded,
broken man who had been dis
charged from the employ of the
city because of incompetency.
In the assassin's pocket was found
an editorial from the New York
"Evening Journal" contrasting in
almost savage terms the lot of the
city's minor employes with that of
the "big" men of the municipality.
The mayor was specified in the
editorial. The tone of the "editor
ial" harmonizes with the utterances
persistently made since the shooting
by the assassin.
If Gallagher was inspired to his
act by screeching literature which
fired his enfeebled brain, does the
responsibility rest alone upon his
shrunken shoulders? Anyhow, he
will be the only man sent to jail.
BY THE WAY
Every man gets into trouble who
owns his own hot water plant.
If the possession of money, sud
denly acquired, made men as "toppy"
as it does women deadly assaults
would be more common.
Nothing is ridiculed more or con
sulted so often as the man who
keeps a diary.
It is not wise to wish for too
long a life think of the number
of obituaries you would have to
read.
CHICAGO HAS FIERCE STORM
Heavy Downpour.of Rain Accompanied
by High Wind.
Chicago, Aug. 24.One of the heav
iest rain storms of the year, accomr
panied by a wind of almost hurricane
velocity, prevailed in Chicago and vi
cinity.
It is estimated the wind blew at a
rate of more than sixty miles, an hour,
tearing down signs, uprooting shade
trees and demolishing a number of
small wooden structures in outlying
districts.
Much damage was done by the
heavy rain, sewers being choked and
many basements flooded.
The storm was central over North
ern Wisconsin and from Janesville re
ports came of heavy damage by wind
and rain.
Although no reports of marine dis
asters have come to lifesaving sta
tions along Lake Michigan it is feared
the storm on the lake may have
caused distress to shipping.
WHEN HER BACK ACHES
A Woman Finds All Her Energy and
Ambition Slipping Away.
Bemidji women know how the
aches and pains.that come when the
kidneys fail make life a burden.
Backache, hip pain, headaches, dizzy
spell, distressing urinary troubles,
all tell of sick kidneys and warn you
of the stealthy approach of?diabetes,
dropsy and Bright's disease. Doan's
Kidney Pills permanently cure all
these disorders. Here's proof of it
in a Bemidji woman's words:
Mrs. A. Van Vard, 1218 Bel
trami Avenue Bemidji, Minn.,
says: "i have used Doan's Kidney
Pills -with satisfactory results and
can truthfully recommend them to
anyone suffering from kidney com
plaint. For some time I had a dull
pain in the small of my back which
caused me much discomfort. Other
symptoms showed that my kidneys
were disordered and were the cause
of my suffering. I at length saw
Doan's Kidney Pills advertised for
such complaints and deciding to try
them, I procured a box at the Owl
Drug Store. I used them carefully
as directed and the pains soon disap
peared and my kidneys became
strong. I am confident that the
relief I received from the use of
Doan's Kidney Pills will prove
permanent." $
