Mrs. Perry Starkweather.
Death called Mrs. Perry Stark-
weather in St. Paul yesterday morn-
ing and the state of Minnesota lost
one of its foremost citizens. The
people will not soon forget the intel-
ligent zeal and devotion she brought
to the women's and children's depart-
ment of the state labor bureau. Mrs.
Starkweather has always been given
credit for the establishment of the
department of which she was the
head. Her interest for many years
had been centered in the work of
conserving the welfare of the women
and children of the state. Only last
winter she was in Bemidji in connec-
tion with this work.
It was virtually a crusade for wom-
an and child welfare that Mrs.
Starkweather conducted, a crusade
in which quick and delicate sympa-
thy was a great factor of success as
devotion and intelligence, and which
carried her activities beyond the
sphere of her official duties. Her
methods did not always command
undivided approvalthe method of
the person who does things seldom
willbut she accomplished much in
her own way and was unremitting
in her zeal and fidelity. Success
stills criticism and she was success-
ful to a commendable degree in a
field which presented large oppor-
tunity though surounded by difficul-
ties. She gave the best and maturest
part Of her lif to the service in
which she enlisted and finally gave
life itself. Her services to the state
will be remembered with gratitude
and her personality recalled with
pleasure.
A Perfect Woman.
Bemidji parents who are bringing
up children shold note with care the
way Mr. and Mrs. Richard Grant, of
Minneapolis, are training their
daughter. Mr. Grant is the track
coach at the University of Minnesota.
He is a Harvard man and a doctor by
profession. The ambition of himself
and his wife is to raise the world's
perfect woman. He says that any
child can be so raised. Here is what
a city dispatch says:
"To make his two-year-old daugh-
ter the world's perfect woman is the
aspiration and avocation of Rich-
ard Grant, coach of track athletics
at the University of Minensota. The
future successor to Annette Keller-
man is Margaret Ellen Hudson Grant,
two years and two months old, un-
able as yet to talk much, but quite
able to swim and perform several
varieties of calisthenics.
Systematic daily exercise for little
Margaret, beginning when she was
three weeks old, when the chubby
hands tugged at the finger of her
father, has enabled the little athlete
to go through a regular routine of
physical culture exercises.
"She has a chest expansion of
nearly two inches, the normal chest
measuring nineteen inches and her
biceps muscles five inches. She
could swim when she was eight
months old and walked at ten months
She weighs twenty-eight pounds and
and can walk up and down three
flights of stairs without stopping or
losing her breath. She is strong for
the outdoor life and keeps her mother
busy watching lest she emulate her
feat. She can hang on a cane for
forty-five seconds and can almost
chin herself, and while suspended
from her father's finger she can
swing to and fro eight times.
"Margaret who, by the way, is
named in part after Eleln Terry,
her godmother, is a favorite of the
athletes at the university armory
and delights in mingling with .them.
Explaining his purpose yesterday to
make Margaret the world's perfect
woman, Mr. Grant said:
'As soon as Margaret was born I
determined to make her the world's
perfect woman. The same can be
done with any normal baby, under
'Copyright.

systematic exercise and care. The
secret of it all is, not to tire the
child out. Margaret always rests
after each effort, and I take pains
to see that she is never fatigued.'
Suspicious.
"This rule about -wearing a wrap
over one's bathing suit to the beach
will make the bathers a lot of hypo
crites," murmured one of them.
"Why so?" asked another.
"Because it will make them cloak
*heir designs.
Too Bad.
He bought his wife the finest clothes
She didn't have to pray for them.
What brought about his late* woes
"Was that he couldn't pay for them.

as mercury will surely destroy the sense
of smell and completely derange the
whole system when entering it through
the mucous surfaces. Such articles
should never be used except on prescrip
