The Minnesota Press.
Prom a heart full of memories of
kindnesses Hone throughout many
years, the editor of The Ck)urant
starts out on her first number, with
a message of affection and confidence
to old colleagues, the men and wom
en of the state press.
It has been her great privilege to
work in intimate professional rela
tionship with the state press family.
None outside the circle may know or
guess how dear and strong are the
ties that bind the family together.
During many years of happy serv
ice on the Duluth News-Tribune, the
writer edited si little column the vir
tue of which was its reflection of the
opinions of state editors. From all
parts of Minnesota, the papers came
in and the "News and Comment" col
umn selected from many gems a few
for the embellishment of each day's
offering. The Courant wishes to keep
up that close relationship with the
stat& press. Will every editor send
in word whether or not he wishes to
exchange?Mary McPadden, in the
"Courant."
You go on the Pioneer exchange
list today, Mary.
A Skating Kink.
In Such cities as Virginia, Aurora,
St. Paul, Minneapolis and others in
Minnesota, the city street depart
ment keeps snow from a large block
of ice so that a good skating rink is
available all winter. Is there any
reason why Bemidji cannot have such
a rink especially when there are two
big lakes lying in front of the city?
This city is located far enough
north BO that there is good ice from
December to March. In the past the
snow has covered the ice early and
there has been about two weeks of
good skating. In other cities, espe
cially St. Paul and Minneapolis, the
park boards keep rinks on every lake
within the city limits and in many
cases flood school yards for rinks
for the children. Bemidji lies close
enough to the lakes to do away with
the necessity for school yard rinks.
Skating is one of the best known
exercises. It brings into play many
muscles of the body, forces deep
breathing of the pure Northern air,
and gives tingle to the body that is
exhilirating. For children, it is one
of the best body developers known.
The outdoor life is a Sure preventa
tive of the colds and chills that are
incident to winter and healthy chil
dren means more attending school
Tegularly.
In Minneapolis, the park board
keeps warming houses on Powder
horn, Harriets Calhoun, Lake of the
Isles and Cedar Lakes in St. Paul
there are rinks at Como, Phelan, on
the river and in Merriam Park and
many school yard rinks. These are
kept clean by one man who drives a
one horse scraper over the rink about
9 a. m. and again about 5 p. m. It
takes about two hours a day to keep
the snow cleaned off and to scrape
off the snow dug up by the skates.
Last winter Bemidji had a small
hockey rink between the city dock
and the boat house. The lake is
frozen now so that it is a sheet of
smoot ice and in first class condition
for skating. It is easy to skate now
but after the snow comes it will take
some effort to keep a place clean. Is
there any valid reason why a good
sized rink cannot be made along the
lake shore north from Warfield's
boat house? Such an one would be
handy to both the Central and High
schools, for the residence and busi
ness sections, and would furnish a
clean healthful exercise for the older
people as Well as the school children.
