Pacts About the Bible.
A prisoner, condemned- to solitary
confinement, obtained a copy of tine
Bible, and In three years of careful
study gathered the following facts
The Bible contains 3,586,489 let
ters 7.73,692 words 31,173 verses
1,189 chapters and six books. The
word "and" occurs 46,277 times. The
word "Lord" occurs 1,855 times. The
word "Reverend" occurs but once,
which is in the ninth verse of the
111th Psalm. The middle verse is
the ninth verse of the 118th Psalm
The twenty-first verse of the seventh
chapter of Ezra contains all the let
ters of the alphabet except the letter
j. The finest chapter to read is the
twenty-sixth chapter of the Acts of
the Apostles. The nineteenth chap
ter of II Kings and the thirty-seventh
chapter of Isaiah are alike. The
longest verse is the ninth verse of
the eighth chapter of Esther. The
shortest verse is the thirty-fifth- verse
of the eleventh chapter of St. John.
The eighth, fifteenth, twenty-first
and thirty-first verses of the 107th
Psalm are alike. Each verse of the
136th Psalm ends alike. There are
13th Psalm ends alike. There are
no words or names of more than six
syllables.
Business and The Parcel Pott.
The predictions that the introduc
tion of the parcel post, with the ac
companying reductions in "express
companies rates, will have some ef
fect in modifying the high prices, are
by no means unreasonable. With the
help of, the parcel post all that will
be wanting to connect the needs of
the apartment house dwellers with
the supplies of the suburban garden
or outlying farm will be the adequate
advertising of the farm and garden
products. The cost of carrying only,
will have to be added to the price
paid by the consumer over and above
the producer's price whereas now
not only the cost of carrying must
be added but the middleman's profit
as well. The result today is that
though the farm price, say of chic
kens shipped to market may be but
twelve cents a pound, the retail price
will be twenty-five, the difference in
price being consumed by the dealers.
By the use of the parcel post, by
this direct connection between the
producer and consumer, the unneces
sary expense of our present system of
distribution can be saved. In the
matter of the increasing cost of liv
ing, England lags far behind the
United States. In England the busi
ness possibilities of the parcel post
are well established as may be seen
from the following advertisements
clipped from a London newspaper
which runs a department headed
"Bargains by Post:"

LOVELY APPLES AND DELICIOUS
apple products from famous Whim
pie (Devon) orchards by post. Write
for prices.
Working in the other direction, the
parcel post is going to be the biggest
possible help both to the farmers as
purchasers and to the small city
merchants as sellers, when the small
city merchant has learned how to
use the parcel post and to expand
bis trade on big broad lines. Our big
metropolitan department stores and
much more the big mail order houses
have long since recognized the vast
that lay along the country
road. They with their commercial
m* the old -red wagon ped-
ox business, ^hil&)themer3[
of our small cities which Were
to these^ farm..-**? consumers
calmly- let this valuable trade go to
the great city centers because they
could see no trade expansion for
themselves beyond' that .which they
handed out over the counter to those
who came to the .counter to get their
wares
I The farm produces eggs and butter
and the advertisements that 'fill the
columns of English newspapers tell
how the city consumer can get such
goods direct from the farmer. The
same newspaper columns can tell the
farmer how he can get his sugars and
coffees and teas and canned goods
and other staples which the farm
does not produce from the tradesman
in his nearest city. And the depart*
ment merchant in the small city, the
drygoods merchant, the milliner, the
haberdasher, the druggist, and
thewhole
hardware merchant will also show
the farmer that he can select his
purchases from the more ample stock
of their city stores and get these
goods through the parcel post serv
ice at prices which will fairly com
pete with the gigantic metropolitan
I mail order houses.
When our merchants and our
farmers have learned the art.of judic
ious advertising as they have learned
it in England all will prosper by the
use of the parcel post except the big
metropolitan mail order houses
which have built their enormous bus
inesses through the unfair privilege
of preferential express rates.Wis
