Why the Difference?
On Monday afternoon, August
Johnson, identified as the man who
killed Sam Marin, walked to and
from the county jail to the Northern
National bank block accompanied
only by Deputy Sheriff Cahill. He
was not handcuffed nor were his
wrists manacled. People turned to
look at the pair curiously but there
was no talk nor thought of violence.
Last September when Deputy
Sheriff Helmer and the unknown
hobo had their battle east of Lake
Irving, it was rumored for a time
that the hobo had escaped Excite
ment was at white heat and on the
streets the threat was heard that
there would be a "neck tie party" if
the man was caught.
What made the difference in the
attitude toward the two men? Was
it that deep in the minds of many
there was a thought that a slight.de
gree of justice had. been wrought?
Was it that real sympathy was more
with the unfortunate man, who at
tempted to right his supposed wrongs
by taking the law into his own
hands? Was it that there was some
thought of censure for the city
that a condition of affairs, has been
allowed to exist here such as made
the shooting Saturday night pos
Perhaps the mayor, the police and
the people of the city generally, did
not know that a law defying resort
was being operated. Perhaps they
do not know now that there are oth
er places being operated today in a
similar manner. Bemidji has long
been known over the state as an
open" town and has, found, excise
in the fact that other cities were do
ing the same, thing.
But we believe that Bemidji is a
city with a future. It has been re
peatedly pointed out that the city is
destined to grow. Why, then, should.
a movement to clean up the city not
be started now? Investigation shows
that there is little harmony between
the men who pay license money and
live up to the law and those who
evade it. The former will undoubt
edly join any movement which will
clean up the down town district, and
put their business on a safer basis.
Already there is a state-wide demand
for one saloon for every 500 actual
population and should this amend
ment be passed, some Bemidji saloons
will have to go put of business,
Can not some arrangement be ef
fected whereby licenses will be grant
ed only to men of responsibility and
repute? The affair Saturday was dis
graceful. Bemidji wants no more of
that brand of publicity.
Mr. Business Man.
Don't forget the business meeting
at the Commercial club tomorrow
night. Plan to attend and meet the
visitors. They are men of busy life
and the fact that they are coming
this dsitance indicates that they
think this meeting is of great im
portance. Bemidji cannot afford to
have it said that her own people
were not interested.
The Associated Charities.
Invitations to become a member
of the Associated Charities of Be
midji were mailed out yesterday. The
invitations read as follows:
-An invitation is extended to you
to become a member of the Associat

is the result of what has generally
been considered a growing necessity
for some time past, and its object is
to minister wisely to the poor of our
city and Nymore to prevent poverty

and to engage in such undertakings
as may tend to better social condi

food and clothing to the needy,, an
employment bureau has been estab

work for several people. Our appeal
for funds has met with a widespread,
and generous response, and a large

The completing of an organisation
which will care for the. poor of Be
midji in a systematic manner is a
thing of which the city may justly
be proud and which deserves tbe-.siip-.ji

to give $1 to charity. That the or-j

proved during the Christmas holi
days when it brought cheer to over,,
Bemidji people who have been
charitably inclined have long felt
the need of some central organization
which will keep a record of cases of
poor relief and see that the money
is not spent where it is undeserved.
Time after time, persons and families
have been aided only to have those
who gave them relief later discover
that the case was not one calling for i
