PIONEER IN FIGHT FORWOMAN SUFFRAGE Mrs. Lillian Devereaux Blake Dead in New Jersey. Eaglewood, N.. J., 'Dec. 31.Mrs. Lillian Devereaux Blake, a pioneer in the cause of woman suffrage, died in the sanatorium here, aged eighty. She had been ill for several years and recently had a turn for the worse, when it was seen that because of her advanced age her- recovery was hope less. Mrs. Blake was the author of sev eral successful novels in her earlier years, but devoted the greater part of her life to championing the cause of woman's rights. She was born in Raleigh, N. C. In .1855 she was mar ried to F. G. Q. rimsted, a Philadel phia lawyer, who died in 1859. Seven years laterWshe. became the wife of Grinflll Blake, a New York merchant. In 1870 she espoused the cause of woman suffrage, then .generally un popular. She brought about many re forms in woman's favor and was the first woman to ask for the admission of women to Columbia university. Mrs. Blake had lectured in nearly every state in the Union and had ap peared many times before .congress and legislatures. For eleven years she was president of the New York State Woman Suffrage association. QUEEN MOTHER OF SWEDEN IS DEAD Widow of Late King Oscar Had Long Been an Invalid, Stockholm, Sweden, Dec. 31. Queen Mother Sophia of Sweden died here in her seventy-eighth year. She had suffered acutely for several days and succumbed to. an attack of in flammation of the lungs. Her majesty had been practically an invalid for more than a quarter of a century. She was subject to melan cholia, which necessitated a constant watch being kept on her by her medi cal attendants. She took very little part in court functions, devoting her self whenever her malady permitted to enterprises of a religious nature She was a great sympathizer with the Salvation Army, whose opera tions in Scandinavia she followed With intense interest. She was also a strong advocate of temperance. The late queen mother was a prin cess of Nassau and was married at Wiesbaden to the late King Oscar II. in June, 1857. ,The royal couple cele brated their golden wedding anniver aiy in 1907, just six months before King Oscar's death. Her majesty leaves a large fortune, most of which, it is understood, will go~ to her younger son, Oscar.
