Make a judicious use of your eyes, your ears and your brainsespecially your brains. They are instruments through the medium of which you will achieve success or failure in life. Use your brains today by resolv ing that you will do your utmost in 1916 for the upbuilding and expan sion of Bemidjiand after you have so resolved, devote the rest of this year to doing. Remember that the business inter ests of this city will prosper and thrive only as they are supported by the people themselvesanli you. And bear in mind that the value of your own holdings is determined greatly by the prosperity of the city and the community surrounding us. Never lose sight of the fact that the money you send to other places will never enrich this city. It is seed planted in unproductive fields. Keep always before your vision the necessity for keeping every possible dollar in your own community and gathering in as many more as pos sible. Use your eyes in scanning every day the advertising columns of the Daily Pioneer. They will tell you what and where you can buy to best advantage to yourself and commu nity. There will be many opportu nities offered in these columns dur ing the next few months. Use your ears in learning if the satisfaction others receive in patron izing home industries, and in boost ing Bemidji and Bemidji people. Don't wait for others to take the lead in progressive enterprises. Be a leader yourself and let others fol low you. Your eyes, ears and brains are given you for a good purpose and if you live up to that purpose you will not only achieve success yourself, but will plant the desire for greater and better deeds in the breasts of others around you. Bemidji is your homeour home. Let us make it a place worthy of being called "home." MORE FEATURES. The Pioneer, in order to serve its readers better will publish daily a market report. During past months there has been a large demand for such a report on account of the increase in dairy ing and farming in this vicinity. Every day will be published the close of wheat, oats and corn in the Duluth, Minneapolis and Chicago markets and the day's market of beef, hogs and sheep at the South St. Paul stock market. This is but one of the many new features which are being planned for the Pioneer. COMMANDMENTS AS LAW. Guided by the ten commandments as their only law, 1,600 persons live at Amana, la., happily farming 2,- 600 acres of land. Their organization, the Amanda society, is sixty years old and worth at least $8,000j,000. N member holds property in hir. own name. "All that savors of worldly is barred. George Hiedelman, 71, head of the community, is reported to have said that Saturday, a boy who played baseball last Sunday was punished by being kept away from church for two weeks. That which was done yesterday will not be forgotten tomorrow. Pay-Up Week idea simple it makes for prosperity at home. Bemidji Pay-Up Week, Feb. 21-2fr. The Russians have been unable to make serious progress during the week in their new southeastern of4 fensive. The attempt to impress the Rumanians with the recovered strength of the Slav armies is fail- ing and no influence favorable-to th6 Allies has been brought to bear on the Balkan "situation.,s 7" The Russians are not moving for ward in Bukowina with "sufficient en ergy to justify Petrograd's assump tion of success, There is evidence, in fact, that the effort to throw the Teutons back into the Carpathian mountains has been abandoned for the time being, while a new weakr ness in the Teutonic line is being sought in the region of the Pinsk marshes. British organized labor put itself on record this week overwhelmingly against the Asquith government's partial measure of conscription. Nev ertheless, the trades unions have themselves followed the British sys tem of compromise by refusing to di rect the labor members of parliament to vote against the bill. The labor ites have been "urged" to take this course, but in effect their attitude in the house of commons has been left to themselves to decide. They, in turn, have compromised by divid ing on the bill. The three labor members of the ministry have re^ signed but announce their personal approval of the conscription measure. It is probable that a compromise eventually will be reached all around and that some means will be found to get into the army the single men at whom the draft is aimed. The enforced enlistment of bachelors means the more elderly married men. who attested their willingness to volunteer under the Derby scheme, will probably not be sent to the bat tlefront. The banding together of the fathers of families as supporters of conscription must have an import ant effect on the ultimatum fortunes of the proposal. But,- even had these faults not occurred, the Turks could not have been, driven from the pen insula with the. number of troops at General Hamilton's disposal.' At the time of the Suvla bay offen sive, which was the most important operation during the entire Gallipoli campaign, General Hamilton esti mates the Turkish strength at 110,4 000 and the British jat 95,000. This! is an absurd disproportion, with- vhich to undertake-offensive opera4 tions against mountain entrench-, ments. General Hamilton called for 50,000 reinforcements, which the home government refused to send him. Had they arrived,, they would have been sent to useless deaths. The entire evidence of the war in dicates that an offensive force must outnumber the defensive at least two or three to one, if an area as difficult as the Gallipoli peninsula is to be won. The primary cause of General Hamilton's failure, therefore, was the comparatively small force originally sent to the Gallipoli. Re-j sponsibility for this tragic blunder must rest on the expert military ad-i visers of the British government. Be a community builder. Pay-Up Week' throng. Pay-Up Week, Feb. 21-26. Join the!
