MILLE LACS COUNTY
The lake known as Mille
Lacs from which this county
takes its name was called
Mdewakan of Spirit Lake by
the Dakota Indians who occu
pied the region when the first
French explorers appeared in
Minnesota. Later the Da
kotas were driven out by the
Chippewas, who called the
lake and surrounding country
Minisiegaigon. This word has
been translated as "all sorts
of lakes" or "great lake." The
later French name of Mille
Lacs-
(Thousand Lakes) ap-
plied both to the lake and the
region was probably intended
as a translation of the Chip
pewa name. Mille Lacs
county, including the south
ern half of the lake, was es.-=
tablished in 1857.

Wednesday, June 14, 1916, will be
the 139th anniversary of the adop
tion of the stars and.stripes, as the
flag of our country. It is a genuine
satisfaction that the public recogni
tion of Flag Day as a national anni
versary is each year becoming more
and more general.
This year Flag Day should be re
cognized by the holding of large
