,-fei i I i l: THURSDAY EVENING, FEBRUARY 5, 1620 iTWO BREEDS IN SAME FLOCK jCroMling Is Prevented by Keeping Mile of One Breed One Year and Another the Next. (Prepared by the United States Depart ment of Agriculture.) While keeping two distinct breeds f poultry in one yard without mlx Jnf the breeds seems difficult, it can b accomplished easily and with satis factory results, as shown by the ac count of an experience just received linn a New England poultry raiser. 'One of the kinds kept is a so-called egg breed, the other being a general purpose variety of poultry. The method of preventing crossing is as Wlows: One year, roosters of the egg-laying 'breed are retained and used for breed flng, no other males being kept. The First Prize White Rock Cockerel. Htor- "ing year roosters of only the general-purpose stock are kept The difference in the color of eggs of the two breeds selected is so great that hatching eggs have always been select ed with a certainty as to the breed laying tl -o. The plan necessitates in troducing new males, but the advan tages of keeping the blood lines of two breeds separate outweigh the slight cost of purchasing the males. The de partment of agriculture points out that when this method is followed on two eighboring farms an exchange of roosters might readily be arranged. 4 REMODELING POULTRY HOUSE Many Stuffy Qld Structures Cm Be Rebuilt With Little Trouble Cost Is Small. Many farms have old*"style, closed^ 9 poultry houses with poor light and ventilation also old sheds and other buildings of little use for other pur poses that can be remodeled or built eve* with little difficulty Into satis factory poultry houses, according to the United States department of ag riculture. A building of that kind usually can be made over for less tban one-half tbe cost of constructing a new one, and if the work 1* well done should gtre just as good results. Further more, the work performed in remodel ing the building serves., as a good poultry club demonstration in poultry house construction. KEEP ALL PROFITABLE HENS dose Attention and Study Must Be Given to Each Individual Fowl Some Are Layers. Keep all hens as long as they are profitable. This: calls for close atten tion and the study of each individual lien, but it is work that pays. The man who turns oft every hen that teaches the age of two years Is pretty are to sacrifice some of his best layers. Glean, dry/ litter, clean water pnnii and mash hoppers are essential to the I health of good layers. All air that is admitted for ventila ition should be so handled that it will not blow on the fowls, especially when they are on the -roost at night. One of the best ways to furnish i green food Is to hang a cabbage head jjust high enough so that the fowls will have to jump for it. A warm, comfortable henhouse will I do much to secure a good egg yield, ifor fowls that are not comfortable cannot lay well. There Is not much danger that healthy, vigorous fowls will become too fat, if compelled exercise by scratching for the grain part of their ration. It is necessary to provide the, hens with some reason for exercising In winter because they have no incen jtive to exercise naturally, as they do summer hunting for bugs and I worms, etc. ww ti\/A Pnno MAY ESTABLISH WHALE HERD Los Angeles Man Confident There Are Great Possibilities in Such an Undertaking. A whale dairy is the latest possi bility in Los Angeles, Cal., if the in cipient demand for whale's milk is continued. Although whale meat has been served in leading hotels on the Pacific coast for more than a year, the milk of the cumbersome mammal has not been in special de mand. According to Capt. John B. Loop, a whaler at Long Beach, who has been supplying the most delicate cuts of the mammal fish to hotels and res taurants patronized by connoisseurs, the milk of the whale is richer and more palatable than cow's milk. A test made at a lodge function result ed in a request for a permanent sup ply of the new drink. Captain Loop has received an order from Omaha, Neb., for a quantity of whale's milk. Captain Loop is leaving soon for his first whaling voyage of the sea son. He has announced that if the demand for sea mammal milk ap pears to be premanent, an effort will be made to bring the cow whales home hereafter, so they can be herded into a dairy. NO DANGER never know what accidents we may meet with in life." "Ikknow one that will never hap- pen to my husband. He won't fall off the water wagon again." HANGMEN WANT MORE MONEY. England's- public executioners, the hangmen, want their pay increased, and'their claim has been presented direct to the house of commons by a member of that. body. Augustine Hailwood inquired whether th&> gov ernment knew it was paying the exe cutioners no more than in prewar days. A government representative replied that the matter would re ceive consideration. The hangmen recently were deprived of the privi lege of taking away the rope with which the criminal was hanged. This reduced one of the sources of their revenue, as the rope could be sold for a good price to curiosity collectors. VARIABLE IMPRESSIONS. "A million dollars seems a com paratively small sum of money now adays." "It's much like any other sum of money," rejoined Mr. Dustin Stax, "It seems small when if to be sent but large when if to be collected." HIS SHARE IN WAR. "If they try the kaiser, I wonder if one of the charges will be that he was^a slacker and fought shy of the battlefields?" "Hardly. He could prove he went out and picked* violets on them." VERY MUCH SO. "I. see where some officer charged with making a soldier eat his cigarette." "Then don't wonder the *men complained of being on alight diet" CATTY RETORT. "No, at the county fair when I thought I could beat the game." NOT THAT KIND. "These deported anarchists will meet with retribution for their con duct here."
