THEATER ON SATURDAY Having- specialised in big preten tious western* productions and hav ing several of 'toe season's greatest successes to Hfia credit, Richard Kip llny, whose elaborate special produc tion- of Ahrin J. Keita' "Outlawed" opens at (the Rex theater on- Saturday (maintains that the so-called "West erns" are by far the most popular pictures that find their way to Wt screens of the world. "As theatrical seasons come and) go," says Mr. Kip ling:, "there are short Intervals dur ing whiten other'types of stories seem to win the popular fancy to the ex clusion of all others that is, of all others) but thet westerns. No matter what the prevailing taste for drama may foe, whether It is society drama, underworld drama, rural drama of wild melodrama, the popularity of storied of our great west never seem to lessen. Whether It is because of the .TfictuTesqueness of the characters or the foot that western stories are thoroughly red-blooded American, I cannot say but hie has been cleaaily demonstrated to mo: a good, whole some western' story, well told and well acted is sure to receive a royal welcome from American picture audi ences." "PECK'S BAD BOY" AT THE BEX COMMENCING SUNDAY "Peck's Badi Boy," coming to the Hex theater, i which Jackie Coogan shines, contains many things other than comedy situational.v, There is a strong love theme throughout tfte episodes. Dainty Doris May and iWheeler! Oakman provide thds. Miss May, who Is knowpi as "the sweetest girl on the screen," was never sweet er than in her .portrayal of Jackie's oig illster in the Peck fllim, and Wheeler Oakman does some very clever work as the young doctor who tolls in love with Jackie's big "sis." iWhea Irvtn S. Oobb visited the west coast on his recent speaking tour, he met little Jackte Coogan of Chaplin "The Kid", fame. Mr. Cobb had only a limited time for his tour and he was late on his route schedf ule. But after meeting Jackie, Cobb forgot his speaUng tour. He remain ed in Los Angeles one month and in that time, iwrote the titles for Jackie's new picture, "Peck's Bad Boy," which will be seen as a First national attraction at the Rex the ater. Cobb's wit audi humor has ad ded many giggles to the Peck Alan Tijja tihe captions which aTe, accord' ing to t/he famous humorist, words such as Jackie Coogan himself would Speak. "IF I WERE KING" AT THE REX THEATER TODAY Wiilliam Farmira, the popular Wil liam Fox Eta-r,. Is coming to the Rex theater todfay tin one of the most stirring/Irolesi of Ms career. It 4s that of Francois Villon, the famous vagabond in Justin Huntly McCar thy's book and play "If I Were King" a rol made famous on the stage by E. H. Sothern. Mr. Farmirn has given to the screen, many of the most important pictures shown in the laat few years. His dual role in "A Tale of Two Cities," Charles Dickens' famous story, is till) being shown through out the United States and Great Brit ain and on the continent. It is in deed! a classic in motion picture art. Another among Farnum's innumer able ty)g ptoture3 13 "I.es Miserables," which, Hike "A Tale of Two Citie3," will be showm and reshown for years. His "Riders of the Purple Sage" and his "Rainbow, Trail" drew packed houres wherever shown. Manager Brinkman of the Rex the ater puts "If I Were King" at the top of the list of all Farnum pictures. "FICKLE WOMEN" AT THE ELKO THEATER FRIDAY Tonight, also Friday matinee and evening, the Elko theater will pre sent at its) ibanner attraction David Butler in "Fickle Women." This story was adapted from the^ Saturday Evening Post story, "Sitting on the World." It is a. tyjfcal story of Am erican Tural 'lifeanid deals with the humorous love'exploits of an Ameri can boy who after making the world safe for democracy by fighting in the mud of Flanders returns home to find that a slacker has taken his girl from Mm. It is sa!d that there are many a wholesome laugh, most of them' at the expense of, the ypung hero, who in the end does a little lUughirag at the expense of the other fellows. The story savors of Denman Thompson's "Old Homestead" and James Whit comb Riley's country poems. It shows that it is impossible to keep a good) man down when that man can smile when another fellow robs.him of his girl. But this hero works, ai littlis different from The av erage movie b^roV',After a few sighs of outraged^ \&rv, h corners^, tho chicken.-hearte wretch who ~n.aar tjaused alK hist trouble and af^w sound threshing makes him take plays.
