But the incident has'brought out a number of things heretofore not generally known-in fact, not known at all, by the large percentage of the patrons of the theatres showing Arbuckle films. The fact is not denied that this big fat lump of animal flesh, who nsed the same for the amusement of the public, was the central figure in a disgraceful orgy, into which he dragged others that his debauchmiight be complete, one of whom became the victim of the horrible tragedy. The fact has also developed that while "Fatty" has been drawing his yearly salary of a quarter of a million dollars he has entirely forgotten his stepmother who took care of him un- til be blossomed out into the public view. She supported him by .feting in washing and she still supports her two blind daugh- ters in the same, way! "Fatty," she says, has never given her a centl'": Whether he'be guilty or not of the crime with whiclwhe is charged, he is guilty of conduct unworthy of a gentleman, and should be given consideration as such. OFFICIAL COUNTY AND CITY PROCEEDINGS _J FACING ANOTHER MENACE Of late we have noted dispatches from abroad predicting the early bankruptcy of the nations of Europe. It may even come to that extreme. It may provide a convenient method of wiping out the billions of dollars in debts that are hanging over governmental heads. Certainly not many on this side of the water would experience any great measure of surprise. If these governments do go Into bankruptcy, what will be the result? Demoralization in their home countries and then one grand stampede for the fabled land of milk and honey-r-the United States. Millions of 'frenzied men, pushing, shoving, fighting, tear- ing ih a mad Scramble to get into this country. _. And* shall be admit them indiscriminately^? This paper votes NO! We can worry along beautifully without adding to those we have. We would be even better off if many of them were sent back te the places whence they came. We certainly don't want any more, unless they come to us with clean hands and with minds capable of remaining clean and loyal to this^ountry. There is mor danger of Europe going bankrupt than most people believe. It is not only a possibility, but is even a prob- ability. It, then, is incumbent upon cpogress androur.-immigratio authorities to close the Kates to them all, Unless? they can pro- duce unimpeachable records as to character and demonstrate to our entire satisfaction that they are in such financial condi- tion as to become assets in our midst instead of burdens and firebrands to the community. High sounding phrases of confidence do not make a truth, and neither does the waving of an indifferent hand ward off danger. This is our country, and if we want to keep it as such we must begin without delay a. rigid e.s. lnsion Qf that element that revels in a wild-eyed dream of an overturned government'and free gold for all. On with the padlock and in with the key! O not realized by the people who are before the public, and who make their livelihood from the public, that they have a great responsibility to the public as to their con- duct and influence. The nation-wide action taken in withdraw- ingifcom exhibition the Arbuckle films is a'mavked evidence of this and so it should be. Arbuckle, as an entertainer, is through. His career may have been a brilliant one while at lasted, from the standpoint of a financial success, but it ended in a horrible failure, and unless' some other equally prominent film artists take heed from Arbuckle's experience, they, too, may quickly find themselves the objects of contempt and ridicule.
