An Averted Conflagration. .
What might huve developed j
into .1 disastrous lire was narrow- j
ly averted Monday morning by

action of A. T, Roberts, manager
of tlie Carrizozo livery stable, i

while iu his office he detected a I
smell of lire. He quickly took up
the scent, which led hint to one
of the stalls, where he found a
pretty good-sized lire well under ' fj
way. lie immediately shouted j

and then proceeded to dump hay
by the bale on the burning mass,
which smothered the flames, and
kept the fire from spreading to
the woodwork, by which time a
number of men arrived with buck
ets of water, drawn from a well,
and completely extinguished it.
Although the lire was a small
one, it would have quickly devel
oped into a large blase, and per
haps wiped out a large portion of
the town. The lire is supposed
to have originated by someone
carelessly dropping a partly
smoked cigarette in the stall,
which ignited the loose hay on
the floor. Mr. Roberts says he
would advise anyone entering his
stable in the future with alighted
cigar or cigarette to take the pre
caution of tuking out life insur
ance, as something is liable to
happen. One lire iu two years
is about all the town of Carrizozo
can stand,

M. Penficld, was in evidence on
Sunday. lie remained in Carri
zozo until Tuesday morning when
he returned to Lincoln. Some i
of hts friends thought his mission
here was politics! but, while con
fessing a warm friendship for
the man who handles the coun
ty's cash, we are compelled to
admit that he never mentioned
such a subject to us. It was la
ter reported that he came to see
a very dear friend, and that the
subject of discussiou between
them was far older than politic.
