CHICAGO, Sept. 7. Traders In train and provlsloaa
ttwlajr devoted more time to awearlnE at the weather
than to the markets, anil the resultant narrow trading
was productive of but insignificant changes Jn values
except la September eau vhlch advanced ttSSc
Wheat closed iic loer. Corn unchanged to a shade
higher and provisions s shade higher to Slic loner.
The Enaneas shown by yesterday's -wheat market
waa itlli apparent st the opening in wheat, and
notwithstanding unfavorable news. Initial prices were
shade hlghsr. Liverpool was about yd higher, due
to the advance here yesterday and to the continued
drouth la India, and to this fact part of the buying
which characterized the early trading waa due.
OSerlcgt, however, soon exceeded the demand, which
was almost entirely from ti outside, and the small
opening advanoe was soon lott. Local professionals
did little on the burin: side, and a liquidating move
ment of respectable proportions set In sn the posting
of Ersdru-eefs 'figures on the world's svsllable sup
ply which put the surplus at 129,000.000 bushels, as
compared with e,DOO,000 bushels last year. This soon
ceased, and for the remainder cf the session trading
waa rldicnoualy small. The weather waa too hot
for even the most enthusiastic trader and the pit
for the greater part of the Urns, was halt deserted.
X feature was the large Western movements. Pri
xnsry receipts amounted to 1,154,090 bushels, the seme
as list year. This fact had little elect on prices.
but Increased the bearish feeling among tradera, and
little support of any kind was forthcoming until the
price had got below pats, when realising snd buying
sgalnst tsoie privileges caused a slight rally and
gave the market an appearance of firmness toward
the olese. The cash demand here waa alow, but the
seaboard reported a moderate export demand, with 13
leads encaged. Minneapolis snd Duluth receipts
amounUd to 729 cars, against BO last week and 123 a
year ago. Chicago receipts were ,152 cars, 3 of con
tract grsde. Atlantic port clearances of whest snd
flour 440,000 bushels. December wheat opened a shade
higher, at Tlc, and sold immediately at TlTic It
slowly declined to 'lUSTlKc, and rallied to 71jc
where It closed.
Corn barely held Its own, with the range narrow
nd the trade la general slow. There was some
attempt by professional bulls te boost prices on the
dry, not westher, but predictions of general rains
brought selling crders. Receipts were 101 cars. De
cember ranged from JffSc to 29H'. and closed un
changed at tSa. Eeptember closed s shade higher
at slttOUc
There was s fslr sired business done in September
oats and that commodity sdvsnced shsrply. The
buying ni dene mostly by cash people, who were
evidently short, and there was little offered. The
large caah demand continued, and this probably was
the csuse cf the September strength. Receipts were
255 cars. December rsnged from 20Uc to 20H20Hc
and closed "c higher, at 20 Vic September sold as
high as Zltto and closed ttBJic higher, st 21Sc
Provisions vrereJ dull snd after a little firmness
around the opening, rather heavy. Later commis
sion houses sold moderstely and advances were lest.
The close wss steady. October pork. 2c lower, st
IB.aVj; October lard, 15.23; October ribs, a shade
higher, at J5.3S.

There was a little better tone to the mirk a yes
terday. Very little milling wheat in and It sold up
a traction. And the under cranes were steady with
a firm tendency. Sales were fairly active most of
the day. The finish, howeter, waa quiet. Specula
tion lacking lite caused buyers to hold back a lit
tle towards the close. Cables were a little higher
both from the Continent and England. And the
dtouth situation in India was aald to be more serious.
Tet the primary receipts being the same as last
year and the Cincinnati Trice Current reporting
the crop of winter snd spring an averagee for the
past fire years caused speculation to lag, hence the
absence of excitement and the want of change In
values. The market continues a scalping one.
Neither the bulls nor iht bears seem disposed to
take any very decided stand. But while there was
a want of life to speculation, a very good movement
waa had In cash grain. No. 2 hard aold at 44

Texas Corn Crop Good.
FORT WORTH, TEX.. Sept. 7. Secretary Cren
shsw, cf the Texas Grain Deslers' Association ex
presses the belief that the total corn crop cf Texas
will be as large as last year, notwithstanding the re
duction of the aierage yield, because of the Increased
acrcsge all over the state. He estimates the total
yield 125.6OO.r0O bushels. The continued drouth has
reduced the yield, especially In North and Northwest
Texas, where little rain has fallen In over two
months. In Eastern and Central Texas, where lomo
rains hste fallen, the corn crop li good. Many farm
ers, however, say that the yield of corn this yesx
win be luuy 33 per cent less tnsn last season.

It Is the first cargo ever sold to Russia from this

Prime in his crop bulletin of yesterday says; "Corn
reports from Eastern Nebraska indicate that 75 per
cent of the crc Is now safe. More or less of the
late corn had been damaged the last ten days by
excessive heat and dryness. Old corn is well cleared
up. Oats have been moving freely.'
Yesterday's Cincinnati Price Current, says: Grain
crop Indications are not much changed. 'Wheat Is
sparingly marketed because of firm "holding senti
ment. Corn Is moving freely in some districts, but
ruolcrstely generally. World's wheat crop Is esti

The Chicago Tlroet.-Herald says: "This dry weath
er," says H. II. Peters, "is just the perfect condi
tion for the corn crop. If we were getting showers
now the corn would be kept tender anJ be made a
victim cf frost later on. If we were getting cool
weather the crop would be kept green and tlure
would be the prospect of half cured grain in the fall
and winter. This hot, dry weather Is putting the
com out of the way of the frost; It Is Insuring an

Stocks anil llonds.
NEW YORK. Sept. 7. The market succumbed to
the combine's Influence of a hardening rate on ac
count of the gathering war cloud In South Africa.
A few of the highly speculative Industrial specialties
were marked up In the early dealings, and at differ
ent times during the day, in an effort to resist the
decline. The attempt proved 'unavailing to oerrcrae
tho depression in the general list, and the manipula
tive stocks In some cases finally weakened, though a
few retained a net advance. Tennessee Coal was
marked up a point at the opening, but that was the
highest of the day. Sugar, Tobacco, Brooklyn Tran
sit. Federal Steel and a few other stocks among the
most prominent Industrials vibrated above and below
last night's prices. Pullman Palace Car was at one
time up 4 points, but lost it all. The American Car
stocks rose 2 points each, but the pref erred . receded
to the level at the opening. Pressed Steel Car pre
ferred advanced a point In the closing dealings.
These movements, a reflection of the large demand
for railroad equipment, growing out of the prosperity
of the railroads, had little effect on the general list.
The American Hoop stocks were strong on reported
large earnings, rising 3 points for the common and
li for the preferred. There were some large orders
executed for United States Leather, which raised the
price a point. The preferred stock advanced In sym
pathy, but lost sll the gain. These were the only
Important exceptions to the weakness of the active
clocks. St. Paul showed come resistance, but gave
way with tho other grangers when Intimations were
heard of opposition to an Increase in tho dividend
rate on the part of directors. (On September 8 a year
ago St Paul was pushed up in the morning to 115 on
the rumor that the semi-annual dividend would be
Increased over the 2,.i per cent rate.) When the rate
was announced in the afternoon the stock slumped
nearly 5 points and broke the whole market The
rate still continues at 2b per nt Declines in the
railroads were quite uniformly between 1 and 2 vr
cent, including the prominent grangers. Southwest
erns. Pacifies, trunk lines and Southern railroads.
Stocks which hate bad a recent sharp advance show
wide declines. Colorado Fuel, Hocking Valley, New
Jersey Central, Northern Pacific, Republic Steel
stocks and Tennessee Coal sre Instances, though the
latter stock recovered its decline.
Money on call commanded 5 per cnt most of the
day, and went as high as 6 per cent, with only a few
exceptions below 5 per cent The subtreasury had a
small debit balance at the clearing house to-day, but
the banks have lost over 33,000,000 to that Institution
since Friday, and expect to increase that amount be
fore the close of the week. There were further trans
fers to the South to-day, and the banks are still los
ing on balance to the Interior. The hardness of
money here did not avail to lower the rate on ster
ling exchange. In view of the Increase In discounts
in London, which also had the effect of raising the
rate of sterling exchange In Paris and Berlim Lon
don's sales of about 20,000 shares of stocks here
helped to keep up the exchange rate. It is apparent
that under present conditions abroad a considerably
higher rate for money hero will be required to In
duce Imports of gold.
Bonds showed a weakening tendency In sympathy
with stocks. Kansas & Texas 2ds being notably af
fected. Total sales, par value. SI. 523,000. United
States bonds unchanged in bid quotations.

Not enough In to

was had from feeders and the pens cleared early and
