London, April tl. Tho weather during the
past week has been cold and line, and
farm work made good progress. In the
market for wheat there sv.-is .1 moderate de
niaud stilllclent to steady the market, with
little variation In prices. Winter wheat,
April delivery, was quoted at 22s 0d. Spot
trade was linn, but not active. Flour was
lirm and in average demand.
II. C. Shufeldt Son, Lcnapah, I. T.,
writing to the Kemper drain Company,
under date of April B, says: "Forty per
cent of the wheat In this section killed.
It Is very dry. H.tln much needed. Oats
up and corn planting commenced."
Charles Dixon Is back from St. Mary's,
Kas. He says the wheat Is looking well
In Pottawatomie county.
Ira S. Brothers, of Hlcc county, Kas.,
was In the city Saturday. He says wheat
is looking badly. Much of It was winter
killed.
The Modern Miller Saturday says; "The
winter wheat plant has made remarkable
Improvement this week. Tho advanced
condition is more noticeable In the West
where, up to one week ngo, unusually dry
and damaging spring wenther had prevail
ed. The hard winter wheal area of the
Southwest now promises nn average harv
est, but from the localities producing soft
winter wheat In Kansas, Southern Nebras
ka. Oklahoma, the Indian Territory and
Northern Texas the damage reports con
tinue to come. They generally refer to in
quiries asking whether the Into fall of
moisture has brought the plant out to any
considerable extent, and, while denying
that any special Improvement Is apparent,
reiterate former reports regarding the win
ter and drouth killed soft winter wheat
plant. Last of Knnsas and Nebraska, In
cluding Iowa, Missouri and Arkansas, tho
winter wheat plant has. during the past
.-.yen days, made much the best week's
growth of the season.
"A liberal fall of rain throughout the
winter wheat region, aided by warm, bright
weather for the next two weeks, will de
velop the wheat plant surprisingly. Corn
planting Is progressing in Texas, Tennes
see, Oklahoma, Indian Territory and New
-Mexico under favorable conditions. Owing
to the dry weather following the sprouting
of March sown oats In Tennessee, Okla
homa and Texas, that plant has been
somewhat Injured In that region.
"Thfre is no Increase In the marketings
or winter wheat and corn to note nnd mil
lers are buying sparingly on account of the
high prices demanded by farmers who
have generally accepted the statements
that there is a scant supply of grain In the
winter wheat milling territory. I,ower
