WEST END SCHOOL.
The Closing Exercises Held Friday
Night-Interesting and Pleasant
Occasion.
The teachers of the West End
school, Misses Laura Blease, Bernice
Martin, and Sallie Mae Burton, de
cided just a few days ago that they
would give an entertainment at the
close of the school. The entertainment
was given Friday night and it was a
decided success. The children did
well and greatly enjoyed the occasion.
The school building is a very hand
some one and was built by the stock
holders of the mill. It is well appoint
ed but there is need for a hall in which
to hold the exercises. Only the par
ents were invited Friday night 1--nd
the hall was crowded.
There are many pretty and bright
children over here and the pity is
they are not given more time to go
to school. Too many of them are
taken away from the school at an
age when they should be kept there.
The total enrolment of the school
the past year was only 164. while
the average attendance was but no.
In a population as large as that of
West End the school population is
much larger than the above enrol
ment would indicate.
. Still it should be said to the credit
of President McCrary that he takes
a lively interest in doing everything
that will promote the best interests
and advance the comfort and happi
ness of the employes of his mill. The
teachers are doing good and faithful
work in this school and the children
are advancing as rapidly as their op
portunity will permit.
Mr. McCrary added another teacher
the past year andiat the recent meet
ing of the board three teachers were
elected. This has enabled the teach
ers to do more thorough and more
satisfactory work.
It was a pleasure to the representa
tive of this paper to see what a
deep interest the little children, and
some of them were small enough to
be in the kindergarten, took in the
exercises Friday night and how eager
they were to say their parts and es
pecially to note how well they per
formed.
The Rev. N. N. Burton introduced
the little speakers and announced the
program.
The following is the program ot

One On a War Censor.
"The war correspondent's greatest
difficulty." said Richard Harding
Davis, "is the censorship."
He smiled. Then he resumed:
"The brilliant and unfortunate Ste
phen Crane was one of the reporters
of the Graeco-Turkish war. In a cer
tain skirmish the Turkish forces
turned tail and fled. Crane wrote the
story of the skirmish and then sub
mitted his manuscript to the Turkish
consor. -
"The censor read it gravely.
" 'This will have to be toned down.'
he said. And where Crane had writ
ten that the Turks had fled the cen
sor made it that they had retired in
good order; where Crane had said
they had turend tail. he made it they
had faller- back steadily. Finally
the censor came to the expression
'routed.' and he frowned intently. un
able to think of an euphemism for
'rot.
'I can't think.' he said. 'of a mild
er expression than this one here:
"The Turks were rounted." Can you
help me? You are a writer?"
"Grane answered gravely:
'If I were yon I'd simply say that
the indomitable Turks changed front
andi advanced.'"
Doom of the Boll Weevil.
Atlanta Journal.
If the experi-nts now being made
by the United States government are
sccessiul, the boll weevil is doomed.
The South American red ant has
been found to be a deadly foe to the
cotton ravager. The theory nirst ad
vanced was that the weev'il would be
destroyed by the red ant. There were
some who mocked at the declaration.
believing that the ant and the boll
w~eevil would become the best of
friends and ere long would live in
congeniality and bliss on the same
cotton stalk.
But experiments have proved the
truth of the theory of the college
man who first brought the wonder
ful announcement to the cotton world.
Oficial tests have been made in Texas
and with great satisfaction. The red
ant instantly attacks the boll weevil.
It is a duel to the death--the death
of the weevil.
In many cotton fields in the south
Ired ants are now being distrbuted
Iand experts are fi'm in their faith
that ere long the red ant will com
pletely triumph and put into the
pockets of the farmers of the south
several million dollars annually.
