TUESDAY, JULY 12, 1904.
Parker and Davis.
The democratic ticket, put out by
the national democratic convention
in sessiot. inl St. Louis last week. is
Alton Brooks Parker, of New York,
for president, and Henry G. Davis, of
West Virginia, for vice-president. It
is a go:d ticket, and the democrats
-have bright prospects to win in the
approaching presidential election.
For some time there has been
little doubt of Judge Parker's nomina
tion for the presidency. The Parker
wave had swept from one end of the
country to the other and the conven
tion, in making the nomination, but
ratified the choice of the democrats
throughout the country.
Davis, who was nominated for vice
president. is little known. but his
nomination on first ballot is an evi
dence of the confidence which the nat
ional congress of his party reposed in
him. He is a former United States
senator from hi; state.
We prophesied Judge Parker's
nomination many weeks ago. He was
the logical candidate. because he was
a good and true democrat and because
he has the best chance to win.
We are gratified that the southern
delegates took so prominent and in
fluential part in the recent democratic
convention. Williams and Tillman
and other southerners made them
selves felt in the councils of the par
ty.
Now for the election of Parker for
two terms and then the election of a
southern man on the democratic
ticket.
John Sharp Williams. of Mississis
sippi, is one of the biggest men in the
democratic party and in the country
and he showed it in the St. Louis
convention.
We re-ret to note the death -of Ed
itor T. J. Drew of the Hartsville Mes
senger. He was a fine fellow and
much interested in his profession and
always stood for thuse things lie be
lieved to be for the best interests oi
his people. Only a few wveeks ago he
was one of our party to the World's
Fair. To his wife and children we ex
tend our sympathy.
