TUESDAY, OCTOBER 25.
The American Farmer.
This is an agricultural paper pub
lished monthly at fifty cents a year
The Herald and News has one hun
<red subscriptions to this paper fo
one year which we propose to giv
to our subscribers as long as the:
last. After they are out we can sen(
this paper to you for 25 cents for on
year.
Our proposition is to give thes,
100 subscriptions, one to each nev
subscriber for one year an(
and one to each old sub
scriber who pays as much as one dol
lar and a half on his subscription
First come, first served. This is
rare oportunity to secure a good ag
ricultural paper one year for nothing
After the .ioo subscriptions whict
we propose to give away are exhaust
ed the offer of 25 cents extra remains
Samples of the paper may be had b:
calling at the office. We have neve
pushed clubbing arrangements bu
this strikes us as a good offer t(
those who want an agricultural pa
per for no cost and we are glad o
the opportunity to give away thes(
subscriptions to our subscribers.
The Richmond News Leader give
some attention to Gov. Heyward's ac
tion in commuting the death sentenc
of Hoyt Hayes to life imprisonment
and is persuaded that "one of th(
most serious possible 'results is tha
Gov. Heyward's action in this matte:
may weaken him very considerabI
befere the people" and it proceeds t<
this interesting declaration:' "He iE
the man to whom all the best friend:
of the -State have been looking tc
-defeat Tillman for the United State:
Senate and to free South Carolina o
a reproach that has continued toc
long." Now that is, indeed, interest
ing. When will the campaign open
Governor? We want to be with yoi
from the first sound of the bugle.
Charleston Post.
We rather think this is a mistake
We have been told that Gov. Hey
ward has assured Senator Tillmar
that he would not oppose him. If h<
should the Hoyt Hayes case woul<
not be a handicap.
Senator Tillman found time to rum
over to Gaffney and make, a speecd
on the dispensary. His speech wat
temperate and strong from his sid<
of the question. The county o
Cherokee is going to have an elec
tion under the Brice bill on the ques
tion of dispensary or prohibition. Th~
campaign is warming up and th4
friends .of the dispensary sent fo
Senatcr Tillman to help them out.
The result will be watched with in
terest.
M\-r: Tillman says the beer privileg
has no place in the dispensary law.

The Ind'ependent of New York pub
lishes the following translation of:
poem which was written by the Em
peror of Japan, for the Peeresses
School at Tokio:
The water placed in goblet, bowl o
cup
Changes its form to its receptacle;
And so our plastic souls take variou
shapes
And characters of good or ill, to fit
The good or evil in the friends w
choose.
Therefore be ever careful in you
choice of friends,
And let your special love be given t<
those
'Whose strength of character ma'
prove the whip
That drives you ever to fair Wisdom':
goal.
If the Emperor can write poetr:
the war with Russia to achieve dis
tinction.
We find the above in the columns
of a cotemporary. It is good poetry
- and good sentiment, especially the
latter.
Mr. Ansel of Greenville announces
thus early that he will make the
race for governor two years hence.
He made a strong run two years ago
in the primary which resulted in Gov
ernor Heyward's nomination and he
- knows the paths he has to tread next
e time. But he will not walk alone;
of that we may be sure.-Charleston
Post.
This is a little bit early. Some
times the early bird gets the worm
and sometimes it doesn't. Mr. An
sel is a very clever gentleman and
no doubt would make a good gov
ernor.
- The people of Oconee should with
draw that petition asking the govern
or to resign. The governor we are
- sure acted as he thought his duty in
the Hoyt Hayes case. The respon
I sibility was on him and the man's life
- was,in his har.ds. The law put the
. responsibility on him and he met it,
r as his conscience and his duty direct
ed. To say what you would do if
the responsibility rested on you as
it was on him is another matter
Looking at it from our viewpoint we
think the governor made a mistake.
If we had been in his place, with the
responsibility on us we might see it
differently. It is easy to criticize.
It is another thing to shoulder re
sponsibility and act. No good can
of this petition.
