An agitation has begun in this state for the raising of the age limit of the child labor law. J. J. Hull, mayor of Rock Hill, and editor of the Rock Hill Herald, died Monday night after a long illness. A movement is on foot to secure an election on voting the dispensary out of Lexington county. It is rumored that ex-Senator John L. McLaurin will be sent to China to investigate the boycott of American goods. Mrs. R. E. Ligon. wife of the pres iden: of the Gluck cotton mills, got her arm broken by being thrown from her buggy in A.nderson Tuesday. Darlington wil have an election on the dispensary question. a requi site number of signers of petitons havng been secured. Every method is being used to keep the yellow fever epidemic. which is infesting a number of sea port towns, out of Charleston. Former Supervisor Speegle, of Greenville, is still too sick to be ar restea and removed from Henderson ville, N. C. Tne Citadel academy will have a gymnasium ready for use at the be ginning of next session. It will be called the "Gadsden gymnasium." The City of Columbia. the n. w steamer of the New York, Columbia and Georgetown ship company, made its initial trip down the Congaree rver last Saturday. J. C. Hemphill, editor of the News and Courier, was tendered a banquet at the Commercial club, Charleston, Monday. Mr. Hemphill sailed the next day for a trip to Europe. Ed. Martin. alias Ed. Will Blueshirt. the negro who kill ed Cora Rice. a negro woman, in Gaffney about a year ago, has been arrested in Knoxville. TPenn.. and will be brought to this state to stand trial. Mrs. Ellen Carnes, aged 24. wife of Robert Garnes of the Manchester mills, was killed by a passenger train on the Southern road, while she was attempting to cross the track in front of the Manchester mills, Tuesday, in Rock Hill. Morris, an employee of the Clark Constructi in company, which is doing a 1l part of the work in construictng Lme navy yard at Char leston. has filed suit against the com pany for $io.o00 damages for the less of an eve. C., Sunday night. The escape was effected by the sawing out of the bars. E. F. Young, president of the Merchants' and Farmers' bank of Dunn, N. C. has been arrested on the charge of forgery. A number of telegraph operators in the employ of the Great Northern railroad have struck because. they would no: accept the wage scale of fered by th1e company.
