GEN JOSEPH WHEELER DYENG. Attendingi Physicians Unable to Hold Out AnylHope of Recovery. New York. Jan. 24.-A marked change for tl worse took place in the condition of eneral loc Wheeler, who is ill with pneumonia at the home of his sister. Mrs. Sterling Smith. of lrooklyn. about ten o'clock this morning. and. al though he rallied early in the after noon, had a relapse at 6 o'clock, and lonight all hope of recovery is practically abandoned. Dr. J. Mc Cork"te, the attendant physician. anld Dr. E. . Taneway. of Manhattan. who had been called in consultation, are unable to hold out any expecta tion that the aged patielt can sur vic. The dsease - read rapidl in a few hours, as General Wheeler suffers from extereme weakness. Tonight,. 4 addition to his sister. Mrs. Smith, Maj. Joseph Vheeler, Tr., U. S. A., stationed at West Point. and four daughters of Gen. Wheeler, are at his bedside. The daughters had come from Vashing ton and the south on Tuesday, and today Major Wheeler said that the condition of his father was so ex tremely critical that he might not survive the night, and the doctors were unable to hold out any hope that he might pull through. The family, he said, were prepared for the worst. "Isle of Spice." Miss Leslie Leigh is a new prima donna to be heard this season in B. C. Whitney's piquant musical mixture, the "Isle of Spice." This is said to be the best real comic .opera given *the stage in recent years, and Miss Leigh brings to the role,youth, beauty, and a voice of rare loveliness. This young singer, to whom prima donna hono:s have come before she has reached her twentieth birthday, is the daughter of a noted physician Herr Von Leigh, for many year's:director of the orchestra of McVicker's Thea tre, Chicago. Her mother wa; a famous cone:rt and oratoricai siing Sand to her 'daughter she be queathed not only a glorious voice of true lyric soprano; range and .quality, but also beauty of face and form. Miss Leigh was sent abroad while very young and placed in :he care of "Marchesi," -that famous "molder of prima donnas," .who trained the voices of Melba, Eames and DeLussan. MVadame Mar chesi predicted triumphs for the little American, who was soon in ggat demand for operatic roles. This will be her first appearance in this city, and- her petite brunette tye f beauty, combined witir her acity gd youthi&dI.cbarm,*makes ghe dintj dole ,of Teresa in ;the "fsle of Spice" . especially appro priate for her. The "Isle of Spice" win~ be presented at the Opera House on March 31st. Steamer Valencla Wrec]td The steamer Valencia, which was en route from San Francisco. with 94 passengers and a crew of 6o, went ashore at midnight near Vic 'oria, B. C.. during a thick fog and a large number were drowned when attempting to leave the ship. One boat's 'crew reached Cape Beale at 3 o'clock this afternoon, and nine men got ashore near the telegraph hut, about 15~ miles from the lighthouse. T1he men report terrible scenes. One woman dropped her child into the sea when trying to hand it to her husband, wl.o was in one of the boats. A refractory Irishman, in jail, named Dennis McGinnis, refused to work. The keeper saidl to him: "McGinnis. you go to work or to the pump." "Niver" replied the Irishman. A second time the keeper ordlered McGinnis to work. but he refused to budge an inch. "Now, for the last time. McGinnis,'' exclaimed the keeper; "you go to work or to the pump." "Niver. sir." said .\IcCin nis, straightening up to the full dignity of a man. "Faith.
