Official annoineement was made
at Spartanburg on Tuesday that the
C. C. & 0. railroad will be opened for
passenger traffic on Saturday, De
cember 11.
Represe-atative Patterson and
State Senator Niels Christensen on
Tuesday took up the matter of the
question of better quarantine quar
ters at Charleston. Georgetown and
Beaufort. Mr. Patterson will i'ntro
iduce a bill in Congress providing
for a larger appropriation hereafter
for the maintenance of the quaran
tine stations in different parts of
the United States.
The former pastor of Westminis
ter Church at Union, the Rev. Dr. A
G. Wardla.w, has resigned his resig
nation to take effect immediately
Dr. Wardlaw has received a call to
Florida.
The street railway which is to be
laid in Georgetown is progressimg
rapidly and it will not be long be
fore the cars are being operated.
South Carolina State Baptist con
vention was formally organized in An
iderson, on Tuesday, when Dr. A. J. S.
Thomas, of Greenville, was unani
mously re-elected president. Busi
ness reports were made and all mat
ters pertaining to ecclesiastical
transactions were thoroughly and in
terestingly ;discussed.
Miss Mary H. Giradeau, a well
known southern woman educator, of
Sumter, died some days ago i1n Ab
beville, Ga., and her remains were
laid to rest on Tuesday. Miss Gira
deau was a sister of the late divine,
J. L. Giradeau. of Columbia,and she
was born in Charleston.
-Many addreses were made before
the Southern Commercial Congress,
at its opening meetirng in Washing
ton, on Wednesday. The South was
praised by the speakers, and Harvie
Jordan declared that the cotton crop
is the mainstay of all the financial
inttutions ini the couintry and is no
-wise involved as a sectional ques
tion.
The first session of the Methodist
.Conference to be held in Abbeville
began on Wednesday morning at ten
o'eloek at the Metodist church of
whieh Rev. Henry Stokes is the pas
tor. There were possibly four hun
dred delegates at the opening ses
sion. Bishop A. W. Wilson, of Bal
timore, will preside at the Confer
enee.
Engineer William J. Kinyoun, of
the Southern Rail.road, was struck
on the head while lean-ing from his
engine and was taken to a hospital
at Winston-Salem, on Tuesday. It
is )believed that -he will die from the
results of a fractured skull.

President Taft was reeleeted pre_
ident of the Americala Red Cross
society Wednesday. The president
made a brief address, expressing the
hope that some one would give to
the Society an endowment fund of
fire million dollars. He also person
ally presented medals voted by the
Red Cross to loyd C. Griscon, f*r
mer ambassador to Italy, for work
rendered by him during the recent
earthquake iii Italy, and also to
Miss Katherine B. Davis and Sam
uel L. Parrish, who assisted in the
Italian relief work.
The first Conefrence for the erad
ication of hook worm, to be head in
Atlanta, January 18, 19, will be
largely attended. The Atlanta ham
ber of commerce is in receipt of let
ters from the Governors of Missis
sippi, South Carolina, Georgia and
Forida, announcing that they will
appoint delegates to the Convention.
