fc Compliment to Mr. ?. H. AalL
In the Observer we read a very interesting
account of the Teachers' institute
recently held in Newberry, i
These institutes have been very j
beneficial in the past, the last being no !
_ exception. Tve first one was organiz-;
m ed some 30 years ago. UVe do not re- 1
member who was commissioner at that
time but fortunately for Newberry ail
toe commissioners have been good and \
learned men. Among tne icval mem- j
bers of this first institute will be
pleasantly recalled the names of
Capt. Pii'er, Prof Welch, Mrs. Fair j
and Mrs. Long, as charter members.
Capt. Pifer, though o.e has passed away
I has left an inheritance to t.:e common
school teacher that will speak of him
g ior many years to come.
^ Space forbids to speak of our many
L worthy commissioners, but we would I
ft especially refer to the great educar
tional work done by Col. E. H. Aull
in a scort time. He reminds us o* I
Dante, the forerunner oi the Renais- |
sance, ,-n Newberry county. He cer- j
xainly brok" up the fallow ground as j
Drecaratorv to the sowins time, and !
he laid the foundation of many a state- !
ly building woieh will tell of him in j
years to come. With Misses Dickert
^ and Hawkins, he visited every school '
V in Newberry county and to those who !
' had children and those who cad none, i
he taught what education really is. j
Where stood a few years ago a cabin i
now stands a noble structure dedicat-!
ed to the children of the community, j
Above every schooloouse door is writ- I
ten School Improvement. The *
t&anks of Newberry county are due j
Col. Aull, Misses Dickert and Haw-!
L kins for the solid work they did.
? * Mr. Brown with the assistance of j
^ Miss Goggans is carrying on the good '
Br work and Newberry county will long j
f be benefited by the educational les- j
sons of the last few years.
