AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK f
JFgtOM DECEMBER 3 TO 9 (
/"'v~ * September 10, 1922- J
^To the County Superintendent of <
The United States bureau of edu-; <
* cation, in cooperation v/ith the Am- ?'
erican legion and the National Edu- '
Ao+inn association, purooses to pro- 1
mote a week to be known as "Ameri- j
can Education Week" which will be;
observed from December "3 tn 9 in
elusive. The object of this week is!
j to focus the attention of the entire I
L s&tion upon education and to make J
P national sentiment for the improve- j
j ment of our schools, and the furtherance
of our educational aims.
It is possible that this program ;
may not coincide entirely with your ;
own plans. Perhaps you may ob-'
? *-?? unllr
serve an "Education vveeK m jx,?
t county at some other time. Nevertheless,
it seems wise that we should i
all cooperate in this movement be- j
cause of its natural aspect and because
it .has the active and earnest!
support of the American legir : and j
many other national organizations, i
It is not necessary thatf'you should j
adhere strictly to the program as out-1
lined, but I would suggest that you j
take advantage of the opportunity I
x while .so many forces are
aroused in the interest of education
to focus your attention upon your j
Joca! program. If you are willing to
do so I think it would be well if you
would indorse this week in your county
and do what you can-fo*help promote
President Harding has promised to
issue a proclamation early in November
designating the week of December
3-9 inclusive as "American Education
Week.'/ The'governor of each
-tate will be asked, to issue a pro
cJamation. Each national orgamza^
tion has been invited to cooperate.
This includes all men's clubs, women's
clubs and organizations of every
^ type regardless of -their interests.
The facilities of the motion picture
houses are to be used. Every leading
newspaper in the United States
will be invited to cooperate and there
will be many special ^educational issues
for that week and editorials and
stories of various kinds.
It has seemed best to designate
special phases of education that
should be emphasized during this
| week frofh the standpoint of national
welfare. As you are probably aware,
i : the American legion is particularly
interested in Americanization -.work,
- .and they are asking that Sunday. De
