Manning, who was convicted of Arson
in Georgetown in 1897, and sentenced
to ten years, is to be pardoned upon
the petition of the board of directors,
on account of ill health of the prisoner.

The National Democratic Committee
is making a call for campaign funds,
and Mr. D. H. Traxler of Timmonsville
has been appointed to receive contri
butions for this State. We received a
letter from Mr. Traxler on the subject
and if any of our readers wish to help
on the -ause of W. J. Bryan they can
forward their contributions.

J. Bradham of this county, graduates
from the citadel on the 25th. inst, with
the rank of captain and with first
honors. Captain Bradham has accepted
a position in the Kings Mountain Mil
litary Academy at Yorkville, as com
mandant and professor of millitary
science, modern languages and Latin.

the young man is of modest demeanor.

South. and his course throughout the
entire four years was such as to com
mend him to those seeking instructors

C. Davis. a copy of the "Manila Free
dom" a newspaper published at Manila.
and from it we clip the following:
Not only are the emissaries at work stiring up
trouble but a story comes from the interior of
Pangasinan of the lecture of an old native priest
who tells the natives to have no relations with
the Americans. They were told if they married
a colored soldier they would give birth to mules
and the offspring of the white American soldier
would be an elephant. It is said that this an
nouncement. filled the ignorant native women
with terror of the Americans and those who
were wise enough to read between the lines
kept their mouthz shut for ignorance holds sway
and is armed with the bolo in that section. The
man of God could not possibly lie and netessari
ly those Americanos must be monsters. This
lecture was much quoted around among the
Filipinos and it has not done any qreat good.
In a thousand different underhand ways. many
of which are silly and are of no v.due to their
cause. the rebel sympathizers are attempting to
recruit the strength of the guerrillos before the
rainy season. If they can accomplish any kind
of an organization. they believe that they can
wipe out. the American garrisons before the
summer is over.
Reports show that over fifteen hundred lives
have been saved through the use of One Minute
