A gentlemian from the St. Paul sec tion was in Manning Monday, and in talking about THE TIMES said, that, this aper of late has been coming very irregular, and that he knows it is not the fault of his postoffice. He also [said that he is sure we are not toI blame, but as a friend of the paper he thought it best to mention the irregu lar way the paper reaches its destina tion. The fault lies with the railway mail service; we understand that with in the past few months there have been some new men on the route, and this accounts for the complaint. THE MAN NING TIMES is issued promptly every Wednesday in time for the down train, and whenever the paper fails to reach its postoffice the fault is not with us,, but with those on the railroad. We will make this matter known to the proper officials in the hope the trouble wvill be remedied. White Man Turned Yellow. Great consternation was felt by the friends of . A. Hogarty of Lexington. Editor The Manning Times: On account of the inclement weather, our farmers are thrown somewhat hack in preparing their lands.: Miss Elma Geddings' school is closed, and she has accepted another charge in the Fork near Mr. Dick Thonpson's. Miss Geddings made many friends dur ing her stay here, not only among the ladies, but the boys come in for a large share. We all hope she will come among us again, if not to stay, at least for a visit. Miss Alice Buddin of Mayesville and Mr. Luther Thompson of Shiloh at tended the quarterly meeting here on the 16th inst. Mr. Warren McCulloin of this place, done the Exposition in Charleston last week. Mr. Editor, that suggestion of yours for schools to visit Charleston is a good one and I hope the teachers will agitate it. This is the year for the announemEnt of candidates; they will soon be travel ing to and from Salem, shaking hands with their friends and after the prima ries are over a place of recreation will be needed for the defeated ones to rest them from their laborious' exertions. The Douglas people are proud of the prompt manner in which our Senator acted upon their petition, and when he comes over here they will show their appreciation. He can count on a strong. in fact, an almost unanimous support from the people of this section, should he stand for re-election. There has been some talk about opposition to him from a man on this side of the river, but those who know the man re gard it as a joke; our people appreciate a faithful public servant, and they will not permit some petty whim to turn down one who has been faithful and pick up an untried and perhaps a less competent man. There are some bridges on the road leading to the county seat, in a critical condition and unless repaired immed iately the county will be liable to some heavy damages. I send this as a we.rn ing to our County Supervisor, who has not given us as much of his attention as we need, but then he cannot be everywhere. It is absolutely necessa ry that these bridges should be fixed at once, or it might prove a costly delay. "B." The Last Heard Of It. "My little boy took the croup one night and soon grew so bad you could hear him breathe all over the house," says F. D. Reynolds, Mansfield, 0. "We feared he would die, but a few doses of One Minute Cough Cure quick ly relieved him and he went to sleep. That's the last we heard of the croup. Now isn't a cough cure like that valu able?" One Minute Cough Cure is ab solutely safe and acts immediately. For coughs, colds, croups, grip, bronchitis and all other throat ana lung troubles it is a certain cure. Very pleasar t to take. The little ones like it. The R. B. Loryea Drug Store. Pinewood Pickups. Editor The Manning Times: Pinewood has in the person of 'rof. L. Cottingham a most efficient princi pal. He has accomplished marvelous results in the school room and thereby has aroused the patrons to the necessity of equiping the school with new patent desks. The cost of which will approximae nearly one hundred and fifty dollars. By popular subscription three-fourths is now in hand, which amount will be supplemented on Friday evening March 7th, by the proceeds acruing froan an entertainment, which will be give n b~y the students, a small admission fee will be charged, after which the State Superintendent of Education ,J. J. Mc Mahan will address the audience on1 some educational topic. Refreshments will terminate the festivities of the evening. All are cordially invited to be in attendance. Exercises will be gin about 8:30 o'clock. It would be well for all the patrons of the school to attend this entertainment. Mr. Tom C. Cuttino who has been in the mercantile business here for the last sixteen months, has opened up bus iness between Paxville and Silver. We hate to part with a good citizen and business man like Tom-thou he was not successful in matriinonial affairs. The "Masquerade Party" given by the Misses Lide on the evening of the sst, was quite successiul in every re spect. The condition of the weather kept a good many away, which would have attended. We regret very much that "brother" Nap Broughton was absent, for when he is present every thing goes with a vim. Misses Olga and Pauline Reynolds of Paxville was up to take in the mas querade norty. Miss Leonora Lawrence of Fulton, who has been visiting her sister Mrs. N. C. Stack has returned home. Mrs. John C. Manning has been con finedr to her room for the past week. ~BUSTER. Wtop tile Bight It is a sad thing to see fine fruit trees spoiled by the blight You can always tell them from the rest. They never do well afterwards but stay small and sickly. It is worse to see a blight strike children. Good health is the natural right of children. But some of them don't get their rights. While the rest grow big and strong one stays small arid weak. Scott's Emulsion can stop that blight. There is no reason why such a child should stay small. Scott's Emulsion is a medicine with lots of strength in it-the kind of strength that makes things grow. Scott's Emulsion makes children grow, makes them eat, makes them sleep, makes them play. Give the weak child a chance. Scott's Emulsion will a- make it catch up with the rest. A Noble Battle Being Fought. Editor The Manning Times: During the last week a new irspira tion has been awakened within the peo ple of this town. It now seems that there is hope of some day abolishing the liquor traffic throughout our coun try. Last Thursday evening Mrs. Bullock of Elmira, N. Y., lectured in this town. Her interesting and beneficial talk was made more forcible by the zeal with which she worked during her stay, and what makes her seem more lovely to us is her love for children. She met with them Friday at noon and instructed them as carefully as though they were men and women. At 3 o'clock Friday afternoon Mrs. Bullock met several of the women who had signed the pledge on the preceding night and the Woman's Christian Term perance Union was organized. The cf ficers were elected, general rules we:-c made and the constitution read. The society will meet each Friday evenin& at 8 o'clock. Business anti social meet ings will be held alternately. From now until April the W. C. T. U. will meet at the home of Miss Jessie Curtis. A tiny bunch of white ribbon is the badge worn by all who sign the tem perance pledge. I am glad to say that the little white ribbons are seen on the coats of a few of our young men. In behalf of the society 1 cordially invite the editor of THE MANNING TIMES to attend one of our social meetings. Since we have awakened more widely to the- realization of the fact that alco hol is the devil's great tool, we, the society have resolved to pray more earnestly for the widespread influence of the white ribbon band.
