No Reason to Beli'eve that the Cotton
Pest Has Been Exterminated.
Caution to Farmers
Washington, D. C., Feb. 27.---It is
unwise for cotton farmers to assume
that the freezes of the last few weeks
have ('terlind.(l th . cotton boll wee

at'iren has b/een low\er th:wo at :i'n' l.in'e
since 1- '9. and the're 'a haelly be
any doubt that this extreme cold has
r'esced the numbers of weevils in
nary sections of the Sooith. The im
pression has been gaine-l by many
planters that, the weevil h-1: been re
uuced to negligible numbers, if not
altogether exterminated. It is too
much to expect that the tenlpcratur:'s
have been uniformly cold encugh to
absolutely exterminate the weevil
from largre are-is. The records of the
Department of Agriculture indicate
that there is at least I to 5 per cent
survival of the weevil in those sec
tions which have been thoroughly
studied as against a normal of 7.6
per cent survival. This percentage of
surviving weevils is sufficient to re
stock the cotton fields of the South
before the end of the growing season.
There is always a possibility that
there nmy be some specially sh:ltered
spots even in the more northerly in
fest.ed i'i' inan wh're some weevils
will be able to survive. T h instinct
of the we vil leads it to seek the
warmest shelter available in the vi
cinity of its breding grounil. It will
shelter itself nnde r the bark of treecs,
or in thick h-inging moss upon th'
trees, nader the thatch of roofs. and
