St. Louis Imports Water from Texas.
Contrary to the general opinion
that Texas la the dryest of states, she
has water to sell. Leading St. Louis
phpaiclana are recommending the
Mineral Wells water and it is being
largely exported to that city.
The plantation hands in Fort Bend
county and tbe oounttes in the "blaok
belt" have struck for higher wages.
It is diffloult to get farm labor and
the crops are growing rapidly and
In many oases the farmers have
aeoeded to tbe demands of the negroes
after a few days' delay.
Wheat Twice Shocked.
Hilisboro records a curious freak of
the lightning. A flash oame from a
seemingly cloudless sky and set fire to
the wheat field of J. W, Leazer. The
wheat was perfectly dry and had been
out and shocked. A breeze was blowing-
and before the farm hands could
extinguish the flames, twenty four
shocks had been destroyed.
County Courthouse Burned.
Tbe Jackson county courthouse at
Edna was burned and the building and
a large number of valuable court re
cords were totally detroyed. Tbe aotual
money loss is $17,000, the insurance
6,000. It is thought the fire was tbe
deliberate work of some interested
Tbe stockmen of the Panhandle are
aaakiag energetic complaints of thefts
of stook and of other orlmes committed
against their property by outlaws in
th Panhandle. It Is claimed that the
peace officers of some of the oountias
are negligent In protecting tbe stock
men. Adjutant General Sourry haa
sent rangers and is himself there Investigating-
El Paso County's Crops.
The Dallas News In printing an ex
haustive account of crop conditions all
over the state, gives the following for
El Paeo county:
El Paso The crops of the valley on
the Texas side of the Rio Grande in
this county were greatly damaged this
season by the long drouth, the rlver.on
which tbe farmers defend for water to
supply their irrigation canals, being
entirely dry until a few weeks ago.
The corn acreage this year is 40 per
oeat lees than usual. The wheat arre
ars was greater, but that crop was a
failure owing to tbe droutb. The oat
aereage ia 30 per c-nt lea than usual.
Graoea and alfalfa, two of the most
profitable products of the valley, have
been cut short about one-half by lack
of water, and the fruit orop was greatly
damaged. There has been no diversi
fication of crops.
