tako a inoro hopeful view of tho situa
tion. Tho New York Chronicle, one
of tho most conservative and reliable
exponents of matters appertaining Jo
commerce and Ilnance,saysi "The ex
pectation entertained by many that
tho new year would disclose prevalent
unsoundness among tho merchants
proved erroneous. Considering the
general decline in prices, and the con
Bcqucnt ilmililtitlou that has been in
process, there has been but few fail
ures. As the season advnucos our
plentiful productions tills year become
more manifest. There is a
recilperatlvo force manifesting
itself which will render business
active anil remunerative. Even tho
decline which has taken place in val
ues gives manufacturers a safer basis
of operations." Tho language of the
Chronicle that "there has been but
few failures" must bo construed In
the comparative senso in which It was
Intended; for the fact Is, reliable sta
tistics show a irreater number of fail
ures. I?. O. Bun & Cos. circular gives
the number of failures in tho United
States during tho year IbSU at 0,703,
with liabilities of $101, 517104, against
5,582 in 1831, with liabilities of S1,
105,032. The rationale of
tho increase of failures and
liabilities during last year
over the preceding one is tho In
curring of risks and tho sustaining of
losses, which inevitably follow whun
sound business principles are departed
from. The showing, as tho Chronicle
seems to argue, may not ho an unfa
vorable one. These failures are but
the symptoms of a disease In its in
clplency, and tho lopping of tho ex
cresenccs will but tend to a purifica
tion of a system without, perhaps, con
stitutional maladies. Purchasing
heavily, beyond tho means of tho
dealer, and the over-supply at the
nuns ami manutacturcs, arc ine causes
that aro responsible for tho failures.
Consumers cannot bo made to uo
more than is adequate to their de
mands, and henco the manufacturers
will bo compelled to seek foreign, and
probably nnremuneratlve, markets
for their products, or else reduce tho
volume of their manufactures. Tho
situation throughout tho country is
critical and problematical, and there
is no estimating the Issue of a few
months hence. While on every hand
matters aro admitted to bo unsatisfac
tory, there is reasonable grounds for
the hopes that animate the people and
inspire thoprcBS.

New Orleans, January 15. The con
dition of trade since the beginning of
the present commercial year. Septem
ber 1st, has been full of disappoint
ments. However, at times high spirits'
have prevailed, but their influences
have been temporary and disadv.in
tiigous and the cheerfulness has
been followed by greater depres
sion than before. The cotton market
has been comparatively lower than
since the war, and as receipts at all
ports are 121,123 bales more, and have
increased only 00,901 hales here, cotton
men aro becoming apprehensive that
tho railroads, which were to bo the
salvation of New Orleans, am making
it a way station. Ucsidei the cotton
trade aro awakening from their Kip
Van Winkle sleep, and begin to think
that something will have
to bo doiro to cheapen
the handling of cotton hero before the
trade is entirely diverted. The sugar
business is still carried on on unsound
principles, but planters have declared
open war against the present system,
and demand that their sugars should
not be slaughtered, and that they must
be sold by sample in . an open ex
change. The tariff agitation at Wash
ington and the clause iu tho Mexican
reciprocity treaty in regard to import
ing Mexican sugar has considerably
unsettled this mttrket lately. The re
ceipts of sugar hennhus far thisscason
equal about 125,000 hogsheads, calcu-
