his father was at one timo a lawyer,

there was a difference between the

Bichmoiul, August 3. During the

baptised. Last evening at his request
prayer meeting was held hi his cell,
wnicu lastett till after midnight.
At nine o'clock this morning another
prayer meeting was begun, lusting
until 11. This was participated in bv
about twenty-live people, Including
the prisoner's paramour, Barbara Mil
ler, who is U infer sentence of death for
participation in Leo's crime. Barbaia
again visited Lee's cell and assisted
him in ruttinsron white cloves she had
bought for him to m ear pn his journey
to the New Jeiusalem. She then kissed
him and was removed from tho
cell. Theie was then another
prayer meeting and preaching.
Lee also made an address,
nd vising all not to be led off Into wi"k
ednos us ho. had been, and those who
had children to raise them so that
they would not fall from giace. He
thanked God he had time to piepare
himself. He now felt that he was
nljfh to death. Ills death wasapeedy
one. Before the body was cut down,
thesheritr mounted the scatlbld and
informed the ciowd in the yard flint
a collection would be taken
up to enable the parrots of Lee to re
move tho body to their homo. Some
of tho .3,000 people outside the jail yard
raised a Inns' ladder leaching to the
top of the prHon walls, and were thus
enabled to have a full view of the execution.

"A Kintt ot nigu treason is commu

dii vet's or uas stokeis or policemen
when they" take advantage of ex
treme dependence ot tho public on
them (oexeit pressure upon their ejn

A'uerlcan telegraph opeiators had a
proper sense of this point of honor
They were within their Wight In ask-

company, if they belivcd tne com

They kept faith with the public
by attending to their wires:
they had permitted it to be understood
that thoy meant to leave. The public
as well as the company had ample
time to take warning in changing its
rioliey and otderitig teyer.il thousand

Brotherhood litis made an inovoenblo
mistake; already tho Western Union
company has show 11 Its possession of 11
reason sttllicient to enttb e it to with

for tho onoratoiH was that
the public, which Is natuially sympa

thrown the ntoial weight of their good
will into their mmIc, but the public Is
telilsh in such matters. Jt can not
