PAYNE CHAPEL A. M. E. CHURCH.
The whirlwind campaign at Payne
Chapel seems to have whirled not only
the members of the church, but all
East Nashville, more or less, into the
sw ing. Last Sunday was a great day
here. The pastor preached at the
morning service on the subject, "Ser
vice." The funeral of Sister Narcis
sus Smith, an old member of the
church, was held at 2 p. m., Dr. J. A.
Jones, the pastor, officiating.
Dr. W. S. Ellington, of the First
Baptist Church, East, preached a
strong sermon at 3: lit) p. ra., in the
Interest of "Squadron" No. 1. His
subject, "Go Forward," was burned
into the souls of all who heard it. A
splendid collection was taken at the
conclusion of the sermon. Probably
iho principal feature of the day was
view the remains of our beloved Bro. the sacred concert given at night by
John Jackson, whose funeral was at-, the White Rose Club. The chapel
tended at the church that night, anil
was a very sad occasion. We all
are in sympathy with Bro. Jackson's
family, but he has paid the debt we
all will have to pay. He was a Chris
tian man and has gone to sleep in
Jesus.
