Sacred Concert Captivates Audience. 1'rumliient' among the attraction. of the year at the univerbity which have culled forth lavorable comment by critic of lirst lauk was the sacred i out en divert ut Ito.ner by a chorus of well selected voices under the special direction and training of Mrs. A. Al. Townsend, wile of i'resltlcut Tow nsend. The program was in keeping whh a policy adopted three years ago in that an annual concert is given, the compositions of the best known au thors being used. The hour for the concert was 6:30 o'clock. Sunday morning Dr. A. M. j Towuseiid, accompanied by A. M. Townsentl, Jr., motored to Castalian Springs to preach a special sermon, and at late eventide he had not come. The" crowd steadily, gathering from all directions, quietly but fgerly lilled the spacious Morehouse Chapel.. Men and women of all walk-) of life were seen among the visitors who had not the least hesitancy in ex pressing the fact that Hoger Wll lialus, an "old star," was stringing with unsurpassed brilliancy. One bit; Hudson Super Six bringing Dr. and Mrs. Hale was parked among the many cars In the campus, while slowly driving through the iron gates President Hale, of State Normal, ac companied by Mrs. Hale, many teach ers and students in cars, all coming on account of their regard for Hoger. The halls were filled. The orches tra under the direction of Dr. Hamp ton was ready tor the opening march, for ten minutes would bring the hour for starting the program. From with out the old bell cried out in assem blage. From within the tick 01 the clock alternated with a tiny zephyr which moved the verdant ferns to a whisper. Above the incessant roar of the mighty Cumberland the deaf ening noise of a motor was heard, and the dazzling light of a high powered "Oldsniohile" was seen. It was President Melvln Townsend, who quickly brought his "purring" motor to a Btop and making his way through the crowd bowing and smiling to a host of friends stepped upon the stage at (i:29, called for a program, quickly scanned it and at 6:30 said, "My friends, we rejoice to see you here, and we are now ready to begin our program." The setting was one of resplendent beauty. Beautiful palms and lowering ferns adorned the stage, while creep ing moss entwined the win low Bills. At a given signal by Mrs. Townsend, the strains of music, "Last Hope," by Gottschalk, were heard, with Miss White at the piano and the orchestra accompanying. 'The end of the ovt-r ture brought forth the clear notes of well trained singers, who marched to the stage with ease and erace. Rev. A. O. Kenney then invoked the divine blessings. "Gloria" (Twelfth Mass) b" Mozart began the program, while "Whisper ing Hope," "Oh Divine Redeemer" and well selected numbers from Mas cagni, tiounod, Parks and Pinsutl fol lowed in regulated succession. "Steal away to Jesus" by Perkins and "His eye Is on the Sparrow," the latter by Miss M. Geneva Bender were unusually pleasing an 1 effective. The recessional was impressive and marked the close of a program long to be remembered. Many efficient critics of music showered Mrs. Townsend with con gratulations for the artistic grace, skill and richness of tone her singers possessed. The marked success of the music department is due to the untiring work of Mrs. Townsend. Y. M. C. A. Dr. J. H. Grant, D. D... the new pastor of Payne Chapel A. M. R Church, will address the men's meet ing Sunday afternoon at four o'clock at the colored Y. M. C A. Rev. Mr. Grant conies to Nashville from Mem phis, Tenn.. highly recommended as a deep thinker and a forceful speaker. .Mayor William Cupton brought a message last Sunday which was high ly pleasing to the largo number of men present. Dr. C. V. lloinan. In behalf of the Association, thanked the Mayor in strong and positive terms for a message which had no tinge of the Colored brother typo. He simply addressed himself to men who were no better and no worse than other men just men, ordinary men. The speaker was introduced by Mr. Win. Crawford, chairman of the religious work committee. Mr. Bond led the singing and sang a solo. Chairman 11. A. Boyd presided at the meeting. lie touched briefly upon his recent trip to Camp Meade, where he saw and shook hands with a number of the Nashville boys. He called the attention of the men pres ent to a movement which was some what In progress for purchasing a Bible and a copy of jubilee songs for each Nashville Negro boy who lias and will go forth In defense of the American flag. He suggested that unyone Interested In the movement leave at the Association fifty cents or a dollar, covering the bare cost of these hooks. Camp Meade, Maryland, Nov. 25, 1917. To the Globe Publishing Co , Nashvil'3, Tennessee: The bo.ys of Company "L" SGSth Infantry held Sunday school In the dining room of their barracks. After prayer and two songs in which every one engaged heartily, the lesson Psalms was beautifully taught and proved very- interesting. The lead iiur thought of llio lesson was "Praise the Lord." Twenty verses of tli e Scripture were repeated. The attendance was twenty-two. The school closed with prayer by the superintendent, II. A. Glenn. Assis tant secretary, Chester J. WestfieUl. The .Christian spirit among the men is very strong. There is a deal of Interest manifested by Bible stil ly. We are very grateful for the litera ture sent us by Mr. Landers of the National Baptist Publishing Board? and appreciate the interest taken by the National naptist Publishing Board In our spiritual welfare. In tills camp there are many who are willing and well meaning, but they need teaching. Sunday was a big day In our city w ith the chureh-golntr publi. the enoUgh to be out again. Miss Geneva Sabbath opened up with a very de-1 tayne is thought to be on the mend, lightful Sunday, sending forth its I her grandmother stays by her bed rays of light and warmpth, our first Biae Dr. and Mrs. Bullard spent snow feu on the 22nd, mucn to our surprise. It was too warm for It to stick, therefore it melted away as fast as it fell, and by Sunday it mod erated and at 9 a. m. you could hear the church bells from eight churches of the city sending forth their sweet chimes of music, calling the people to the different places of worship of which four are colored and four white. The M. E. Church, as she stands on that elevated spot with that stalwart pastor in the person of Dr. Moore, he being one of the lead elrs of his conference, was seen to he busy here and there putting things in shape for the day's services. They report a glorious time through the Sabbath. Each service was nicely attended. This is Dr. Moore's sec ond year, and he is held in high esteem by the leading members of his church and the citizens, both white and colored. We are delighted to have him returned to us again. We predict for him success. This Is the strongest colored church In the city, with 250 or 300 members. Rev. Washington, the hero of the Mission ary Baptist, put in his appearance Saturday as he is attending Roger Williams and pastorlng in our city also. He reports a record breaking service during the day. This is one of the leading Baptist churches in the Elk River Association of which the people of this city are proud. Rev. Washington is a twentieth century none. Since he took hold of this pastor, his equals are few, superiors church it has taken on new life. To go there to services now, one would be reminded of the day of youre when Dr. Speaks wos its pastor. This is a great church and great people, 150 or 200 strong. You had better watch Washington. He is destined to fill some of the largest churches in our cities. We look for big results Brown's Chapel A. M. E. Church was gladly surprised at the coming of their pastor in the person of Rev. W. II. Boddie, who put in his appear ance alter a hindrance of five weeks, being called to the bedside of his aged father, Mr. William Boddie of Mt. Pleasant, Tenn., who for three weeks lingered between life and death until on the evening of Novem ber 11th, at 8 p. m., he passed into the beyond to meet his God. After the death of his father he was com pelled to remain over a few days longer to wind up his father's busi ness, but he is now on the scene and hard at work. Friday night, Novem ber 20th he called his people to gether, he found the church in a very dull and dead condition, lne members were scattered as sheep without a shepherd. They reorgan ized the entire church with three class leaders, nine Stewarts, nine trustees, nine stewardess sisters and other boards.. Sunday school was nicely attended with twenty-five per sons In attendance. At 11:30 a. m. Rev. Boddie announced as his text, John 7:77, "Where Is Jesus." His subject was "Looking for Jesus." To say the least of it he preached a big sermon and at 6 p. m. tbo young peo ple had again returned to the house of worship by the request of their pastor, who arose and stated to the ones who had assembled, the purpose of this meeting was to organize the A. C. E. League. It was organized with a full quorum of officers and twenty members. This is the first time since the organization -of thiH church that any pastor has taken the time to put this work into operation. The members are elated over the fact. At 8 p. m. the pastor arose and an nounced for his text Ruth 1:6, "En treat me not to leave thee," subject, "Ruth deciding for God." For 35 or 45 minutes he held his audience spell bound, it seemed that the spirit had caught the speaker away and to say he preached a big sermon would be putting it mildly. The house was filled to its uttermost capacity. The members of Brown's Chapel have rented a beautiful residence at 510 S. Main Btreet, for their pastor and have it beautifully furnished in mod ern style and taste, as none but Mc Minnvelle people will gladly do. There will be a grand Eureka enter tainment given by the members and friends of Brown s Chapel A. M. E. Church, Saturday night, Dec. 1st. There will be given away a fresh basket of groceries by the pastor as a drawing card to tho entertainment. Come one and all. Adimssion 10 cts. Dr. J. D. Robinson, our P. E. will bo in tho city on the 6, 7, 8. to hold his first gnartcrly conference. Wo ask all of tho departments of the church to please bo ready, as our pas tor and P. E. are each new men in the field. Dr. Washington, our phvsisian is kept busy day and night seeing after the sick of our city. lie has three horses and keeps them busily on the go. Doctor has a beautiful farm out one and a half miles from the city and he keeps a wagon busy hauling wood, corn, hay and other products of his farm into the city. We are very proud of him. We need more progressive young men work with the aid of his three as like Washington in our city. Prof. Woods, our teacher is doing a grand sistant teachers In our city school, 200 on roll. He is giving complete satisfaction In his work. With the help of the parents, we predict a grand Bession this year in our school work. If you want to keep posted, read the Globe. SPRINGFIELD.
