The Alibi Has Taken Its Place as a Serious Rival of the Knockout Punch of Old
CALL'S DOUBLE PAGE OF SPORTS
Slattery's
Spikes
ON].V <ix days more remain before the heavy weight championship
Of the world in the white hope class is to be settled in a 20
round c." at the Daly City arena. The sports throughout the
length and breadth of the land are unanimous in the belief that Gun
-1 '-v.? Smith '->:' Philadelphia and Arthur Pelkey of Canada are the best
oi the pale faced giants. The two formidable blacks—Jack Johnson
and Sam Lassjford—are thousands of miles away, on the other side of
the Atlantic, ami nobody seems
to be bothering their heads about
them any more.
IT is, therefore, a golden oppor
tunity for Smith and Pelkey.
There are DO black clouds In
the pugilistic skies to bother
them, and the men of their own
w color who happen to issue chal
* lenges will hardly be taken seri
ously for the simple reason that
none of them has been able to
make anything like a respectable
showing of late.
* * *
THE general belief is that the
winner will make the pil
grimage to Europe and at
tempt to settle the issue with
Johnson. Pelkey, through his
manager. Tommy Burns, an
nounces that Johnson is posi
tively the only coon he will fight.
Jim Buckley, speaking for Smith,
says that the Gunner will not
only fight, but that he will lick,
every coon in sight.
* * *
THE New Tear's mixup be
tween the big fellows will
mark the most important
heavy weight hattle that the
country lias known for a year
and a half, or since Johnson won
on a foul from Jim Flynn down
in Eas Vegas on the afternon of
July 4. 1912. That was a real
championship fight, but it result
ed in a disgusting exhibition for
all the spectators.
* # *
FI.TNN went back so far in
the meantime that nobody is
paying any attention to him.
Smith cleaned up the former fire
man In three rounds back in New
Tork. and Johnson has not en
gaged in a bout of Importance
since. Smith has kept busy,
beating all comers, while Pelkey
crowne<j himself white heavy
weight champion by stopping
Luther MeOarty.
* * *
NOBODT can say that the
Gunner is not entitled to
rule a 10 to S or a 10 to 7
cliance over Pelkey. His record
stamps him as such. He has been
fighting everybody In sight, while
Pelkey has not done any ring
work since that one victory which
wade him Vorld" famous.
» * »
O TTLI.. it is strange and pecu
j liar, indeed, that a co called
champion should enter the
ring against a so called chal
lenger and command the favorite
price. Despite the fact that his
record does not figure with that
of Smith, the Canadian has a
better claim to the heavy weight
crown, and if precedent were
followed in this case he would
have the call in the wagering.
But traditions are upset this time.
•* # *
TOMMY BFRNS says that Pel
key Is the hardest hitting
heavy weight he ever saw
•nd he does not except Johnson,
either. According to Tommy, the
Canadian has a better left hand
than Johnson, and his right i
just as good as Smith s. If one
were to believe Tommy, then Pel
key ought to be a 2 to 1 shot ove
the former employe of Uncle Sam
* * *
THE fans of San Francisco
know what Smith can do
but they have not been able
to get a line on Pelkey. He may
be all that Burns claims he is.
and he may be even stronger, but
that does not get him anything
with the bettors. They insist
upon a fighter showing them the
real old time stuff hefore they
will risk any of their hard earned
coin on him.
* * »
MUCH will depend upon the
gameness and the stamina
of Pelkey If he can stand
the wallop and display some of
the spirit with whi'-h Nelson used
to startle the fistic world, then
Just tab him as a very dangerous
contender. But if his jaw is of the
glass variety, then get ready for
ji cpilelt getaway and bank on the
k Gunner.
» • •
SMITH Is without doubt the
hardest hitting big white
man who has shown here in
many years. His right hand con
tains the necessary stuff to stop
the man who Is not gifted with
unusual powers of resistance. He
Is an accurate puncher, too, and
l:o knows how to bring that old
haymaker over to the jaw when
the other fellow least expects it.
* # #
SOME of the eastern experts
have recently been raking
lightweight champion Willie
Ritchie over the coals because o
Ms attitude in the weight ques
tion. They claim that he is no
a legitimate lightweight when he
holds out for 135 pounds, and tha
hf should be compelled to do 13?
pounds ringside, just like Wal
gast and Nelson did.
» * #
CONTEND that I am righ
I and I hope to prove it to the
* world," says the little titl
holder. "McAuliffe, Gans, Erne and
the other lightweight champion
used to fight at 138 pounds a
thereabouts. Nelson was the
man who Insisted on 133 pounds
rinsrside. just to weaken Gans for
their fight in GoldfteJd. Then
W..]pi!St followed his example.
* * »

HOPES ROUNDING
TO FORM FOR
BIG BOUT
I Arthur Pelkey and Gunboat Smith
! are putting on the finishing touches
j to their condition for their battle on
Raw Year day. Pelkey lias been at
j the grind for the past two weeks now,
and it will be up to him to take things
easy for the next few days. The
Gunner still has a few rough edges to
file off, for he was rather late In
starting the grind.
It will be up to both men to attain
their best possible form if they hope
to make the fight that is expected of
them Just six days from now. Con
dition is going to count as much as
anything else in this great white hope
conflict, especially if the battle Is to
be a long, grueling one, as many of
the ring dopesters are figuring on.
Neither man made a holiday of
Christmas. Instead. they both
knuckled down and drilled as hard as
j they knew how. The usual holiday
crowds were attracted to the camps
at Coima and San Rafael.
Pelkey was delighted when he
i heard that his father, Andrew Pela
tier, Is coming all the way from the
j family homestead at Ontario. Canada,
to see his son in action. This news
was received at the Pelkey camp yes
terday afternoon, and the big fighter
was in a Joyous mood.
He worked six fast rounds, three
with Montana Dan Sullivan and three
with Charley Horn. Manager Tommy
Burns decided that he needed a day of
rest, and refrained from donning the
gloves with his box hope.
Pelkey Is a hard, energetic worker,
and has apparently made good with
all those who have watched him per-
I form since he took up his quarters at
1 Colma. He's not as fast as the Gun
j ncr nor can he handle his fists in such
j approved style, but he is so much blg
i ger and stronger that he will stand a
chance to offset his opponent's advan
tages.
Burns appears to be well satisfied
with the condition of the giant Cana
dian. He Is banking upon Pelkey to
register a knockout over the former
tar. Burns announces that he Is still
'. willing and ready to bet his bankroll
on Pelkey provided that the odds drop
to 2 to t, which he believes will be the
j case before the men enter the ring.
They combined business and pleas-
I ure at the Smith stronghold over In
i San Rafael. The Gunner and his re
j tinue sat down to a splendid turkey
: dinner cooked by Mrs. Shannon, and
everybody made merry. But before
this celebration the Gunner pounded
Bill Stone and Jack Hemple around
for six rounds to the edification of a
large and admiring crowd.
Both men ought to be in splendid
physical condition If nothing happens
In the meantime. Both will be very
i careful to guard against possible In
; Juries to their hands. Pelkey will
box only a couple of times more,
while Smith probably will keep ham
mering away at his sparring partners
up to within a day of the battle.

LONDON, Dec. 26.—Among the Im

"There is no stadium In the world to

WHEN THE PUGS INVADE THE COLLEGES
A Tale of Cincinnati
L. W. NELSON
The other night, in my hotel, a youth walked in his sleep;
He seemed to be in trouble and he seemed to want to weep;
His hair was wildly ruffled and his face was set with grief,
His countenance seemed troubled, like the conscience of a thief;
His mouth gave forth expression as if 'twas in horror's grip,
While his eyes were wildly vivid, like a chicken with the pip;
And ev'ry now and then he waved his arms and gave a scream:
"I'd rather die than manage Garry Herrmann's Redland team!"
It proved he was a ball player of great renown and fame.
Who had all the inside "info" and the secrets of the game;
No wonder, then, with Tinker canned, that he was turning lean;
But now, with Charley Herzog signed, his face is all serene.
But still in sleep he promenades, peace on his face is wrote,*
"They signed up Charley Herzog, and I will not be the goat!"
Such are the words he utters while parading in his dream:
"They can't make me manager for Garry Herrmann's team!"
