Jones is proud of his wife, and with
reason, for Mrs. Jones is pretty as well
as smart. She was lecturing on temperance
reform, and got naturally worked
up as she rehearsed tVe many things
that should be done, but which nobody
seemed ready to do. Oh, dear !" she
exclaimed, ' 1 wish I were a man !" "I
object !" exclaimed Jones, rising from
his seat. It brought down tho house.
The phrase "Speaking for buncombe"
originated near the close of the
debate on the famous " Missouri question,"
in the Sixteenth Congress. It
was then used by Felix Walter, who
lived at Waynesville, N. C, near the
County of Buncombe, which formed
part of his district. The old man rose
to speak, while the House was impatiently
calling for the " question." Several
members asked him to desist, but
he declared that the people of his district
expected it, and he was bound to
'make a speech for Buncombe."
St. Nicholas is said to have been
Bishop of Myra, in Lm i , and to have
died in 326 A. D. 'O this personal
history little or nothiug is known with
certaiuty. Tho young were universally
taught to revere him. He is said to
have supplied three destitute maidens
with marriage portions, by secretly leaving
money at their window, and, as this
day occurred just before Christmas, ho
was made the purveyor of the gifts of
the season to all children in Flanders
and Holland, who put out their shoo or
stocking in the confidence that Santa
Clans, or Knecht Klobes, as tley called
him, would put in a prize for good conduct
before mornincr.
Soda for Burns.
All kinds of burns, including flt?Tta
and sun burns, are almost immediately
relieved by the application of a solution
of soda to the burnt surface. It must
be remembered that dry soda will not do
unless it is surrounded with a cloth
moist enough to dissolve it. The method
of sprinkling it on and covering with a
wet cloth is often the Tory best. But it
is sufficient to wash the wound repeatedly
with a strong solution. It
would be well to keep a bottle of it always
on hand, made so strong that more
or Icbs sett'es in the bottom. This is
what is called a saturated solution, and
really such a solution as this is formed
when the dry soda is sprinkled on and
covered with a moistened cloth. It is
thought by some that tho pain of a
burn is .caused by the hardening of tho
albumen of the flesh, which presses on
the nerves, and that the. soda dissolves
the albumen and relieves the pressure.
Others think that tho burn generates an
acrid acid, which the soda neutralises.
