Fatal Toi'iiiinulion to Sudden and Hricf Illness. His Last Public Appearance Atlanta. Ga. Doc 23 Henry Oradv died of Dueumonia at 3:40 o'clock this morning. Mr. Grady was ill whon he left At lanta for Uostou to doliver the speech recently delivered there. He went contrary to the advice of his physi cians and returned quite sick. With perbsps a single exception, Henry Woodfen Grady was tbe best known editor in all the Southern States. He stood In the front rank of American journalists, and the prospect of none wa, bright er than bis. His father was a Colo nol in the Confederate army, and lost bis life in battle when his son was only 14 years of age. Mr. Grady's last public appearance was at the recent dinner of the Hus ton Merchants' Club, where he and ex-Prosident Cleveland played star parts. His theme then was the statu: of the negro in the South, aud news. papers throughout the country are still quoting from its ringing sen fences and commenting upon bis stir ring uttersnreaon that occasion. A Bloody Christmas Over In Clarks ville. Clarksville, Ttx.v , Dec. 25 This afternoon Special Policeman Frank Morrison attempted to arrest Bob McCutcheu, col., but other ne groes standing by interfered with tbe officer. Morrison called three other policemen to bis assistance, and they attempted to take the prieourr to the lock-up. Just at this timo an other negro, Joe 1'oeman, came up with a large stick and began to strike Cbicf Stafford over the hi a J with ic The rifll:erg drew their pistol aud one of them fired, the ball bit ting a negro by tho uamo of West Meriwether, wbo was iu the crowd u tbo tin ill of the back, and it is thought be will die, as he is bleed ing internally. After hitting the officer and after this first shot had been fired, the negro Joe Focmau ran around tbe corner into another street and undertook to get out of tbe reach of tbe officers. Sheriff Statou and one or two - deputies pursued him and arrested him near New Providence bridge, after having a lively skir mish with him. When be started to run Chief of Police Stafford shot him iu tbe stoinacb, but not sorlously. Foeinsn was taken to jail. There were fully 503 negroes on whisky chute, where tho difficulty occurred. After the shooting the negroes formed a mob aud a very uoiey one at that, an.l every one ol them seemed to want to kill Chief Stafford. The wounded Chief was taken to the Jail for safoty. A great deal of excitement prevails and the negroes say the affair lias just begun Number; of extra policemen are be ing put on aud everybody is on Ibe lookout and alert.
