LOUISVILLE JUNE 21 Democratic State Convention Called By the Executive Committee County Conventions Ordered For Saturday June 17 at the Court Houses The Democratic State Committees met in Lexington at noon Wednes day and in a brief joint session of the State and Central Committees Ollie M James ot Crittenden a Stone man was elected to succeed Senator Goebel as member from the State at large The election was by acclamation The joint session then adjourned for dinner and 3230 p m the Ex ecutive Committee met with all of the members present in person or by proxy except V A Young of the Ninth district There were no important differ ences of opinion and after a short interchange of news a call was agreed upon as published below So far as could be learned the ac tion was generally satisfactory to the candidates There was some talk of precinct meetings but as this plan has never been followed in electing delegates to conventions to nominate State tickets the usual simpler method of county mass con ventions was adopted withoutmuch opposition The chair then ap pointed Messrs Trimble Meacham and Dishman to prepare the call and a recess was taken for thirty minutes The sub committee re ported the followingcall which was adopted by a unanimous vote The Official Call At a meeting held by the Demo cratic State Executive Committee in the city of Lexington on March 8 1899 it was ordered that a State Convention be held in the city ot Louisville on Wednesday June 21 1899 for the purpose of nominating Democratic candidates for State offices to be voted for on November 7 1899 Said convention shall be called to order at 1 1 oclock a m Delegate- to said State Conven tion shall be chosen at county mass conventions to be held at the vari ous county courthouses in counties having but one legislative district of which due notice shall be given by the various county chairmen In counties having more than one leg islative district there shall be a convention for each legislative dis trict to be held at some convenient point to be indicated by the chair man of the Legislative District Committee who shall advertise in the local papers the location for said convention at least ten days prior to the date fixed by this com mittee Said county and legisla tive district conventions shall be held at 3 oclock p m standard time on June 17 1899 Said con ventions shall be called to order by the chairmen af the respective county or legislative district com mittees The basis of representation of eacli county to the said State Con vention shall be one delegate for each 210 votes and fraction con sisting of 100 or more votes cast for the head of the Democratic electoral ticket at the Presidential election in 1S90 provided that each county sdiall have at least one delegate vote All known Democrats and others who supported V J Dry an for President and those who pledge themselves to support the nominees of said convention shall be entitled to convention without cost to this com mittee The Committee then adjourned BERRY AIASON A Washington Young Man Eloped With a South Christian Belle Mr Claude Nathaniel Berry of Washington D C a young rail road man connected with the South ern road and Miss Sarah Mason daughter of Mr M A Mason of The Square eloped from this city toClarksville Wednesday evening and were married that night upon their arrival there They returned here yesterday morning Mr Berry is a young son of a prominent railroad man He ar rived here Monday and the out come of his visit was the elopement as above stated WHEAT DAMAGED In Counties Where There Was Light Snowfall Commissioner of Agriculture Moore has received reports from several sections on the result of the freeze on the wheat crop He saj s that in the eastern section of the state the wheat was protected by six inches of snow and was not materially injured In other sections the snow fall was lightand with the water in the ground the crop has been Are in Town To day to Attend the Railroad Convention Will Be Called to Order at 2 p m In the Circuit Court Room The Democratic District Conven tion to nominate a Railroad Com missioner in this the First District will meet at 2 p m to day at the Court House The convention -will be called to order by Hon J D Mocquot of Paducah chairman of the district committee The district embraces 13 counties of the First district 8 of the Second 10 of the Third 7 of the Fourth and Metcalfe county in the Eleventh district The 39 counties have 420 votes distributed as follows using The bride is the accomplish the Bryan vote as a basis of and vivacious daughter of one of Christian countys largest land owners and most prominent citi zens She is still in her teens but during the few seasons she has been in society has been a reigning belle not only in this county but in other cities vv here she has visited The young couple were met at the train yesterday morning by a large delegation of their will probably be nomina ted without the formality of a roll call Mr Harry Tandy of Mc Cracken and Mr Webb C Bell of Christian may be given some com plimentary votes if there is a call of counties but neither is a candi date in the sense of making an ef fort to secure the nomination With the nomination of the can didate settled in advance the con vention will partake more of the nature of a Democratic love feast with a general round up of the can didates for the state oflices nearlv all of whom will be on hand In order to give these gentlemen an opportunity to meet and mingle with the dear people and thePen nyrile people are the best on earth there will be no effort to rail road matters through the conven tion The convention will organ ize after the arrival of the 150 p m train and probably appoint committees to report af a night ses sion and give the afternoon up to the candidates to address the con vention It is not expected that anything will be proposed in the platform to create discord in the party An endorsement of the Chicago plat form and the good work done by the last legislature is aboui all that will likely be touched upon Reso lutions of this conservative tram from Henderson brought a big crowd from the river counties At night the First and Third dis trict delegates and prominent visit ors from Louisville and other points came in and the rest of the dele gates will arrive on to day strains Capt Stone has head quarters on the first floor of Hotel Latham and Senator Goebel is in room 210 on the parlor floor Mr Coulter is at the Phoenix and his opponent Mr Chenault at the Latham Most of the other candidates are at the latter hotel The organization of the conven tion had not been given much con sideration last night as the great body of the delegates did not ar rive until late in the night It is probable that by general consent a Stone man will be agreed upon for temporary chairman and that the committees will consist ot one member from each of four dis tricts and two or three members from the district at large on each committee with a fair representa tion to each ol the gubernatorial candidates CAN BE RAISED Thinks Capt Ryman Owner of the Boat Buttorff Capt Thos Rinan owner ol the Buttorff sunk at Clarksv ille has made a minute examination ot the vessel and thinks that she can be raised and that it will probably not cost more than SI 500 to accomplish the work No attempt will be -made to float the vessel until the watei recedes however There is talk ot lawsuits growing out ot the disas ter Several thousand dollars worth of
