The last Day of November afr d
pointed for Thanksgiving will be tJ
bad one for many who forgot to call
and pay their county and state taxes
yesterday Today is a legal holiday
and the sheriff will not as he insimif
I
ated yesterday to aKentuckian man
keep his office opeu for the transac
tion of business The failure to do 1
this will cost a great sum to many a
number of whom are not able to
bear it So far as our observation
goes1 the sheriff has not published 4
the usual call for payment of taxes
before the 6 per cent penalty will I
be added It may have been pub
lished in the Republican organ
though we are not aware of it
Of course the greater the number
of people who fail to pay within the
time limited by law the more money
it is for those who have the benefit
of the penalty Sheriff Davis stated
yesterday that he would close his
office that day about 6 oclockI
We are not offering suggestions to
our retiring sheriff He understands
his business but it seems to us that
by the last day being a legal holiday
and a clear loss of one day for tax
payers to save their penaltyjiit would
be a mere act of generosity for some
one to remain in the office and re
ceive taxes today to say nothing of
closing his office at 6 oclock yester
days
dayWell
Well we are to have a Democratic
sheriff the coming four years and if
Dave Smith doesnt prove a goodI
friend to tax payers and everybody
else we are much mistaken in our
manWith
With one to turn to the list an
other to write receipts anda third
to take in the money every one who c
called to pay taxes yesterday was
waited on and a large sum wasc
passed into the sheriffs hands
