Washington D C Feb 22
1892 Ono hundred and sixty
vnnrH ncro to day was born a
child whoso namo was destined
to become a household word in
homo iu
every liberty -loving
tho world and that child was
christened George Washing
ton s
It was my pleasure to day to
visit the homo made famous by
him
It is situated on tho Virginia
bank of tho Potomac and is
reached from Washington by
boat Tho boat left tho wharf
at tho foot of Seventh street at
10 oclock a m and passed
down to tho old historic Vir
ginia town Alexandria From
Alexandria we went next Ft
Foote an earth work in Mary
land Tho only Mgn of defense
at Ft Footo was a ragged no
gnu boy and a hungry looking
black dog
Tho noxt landing Was made
at Ft Washington built of
atono nnd moro formidable in
appearanco than Ft Footo but
which is howovor not garriB
oned Tho fort is about oppo
site Mt Vernon tho home of
Washington
Tho approach from tho river
to the Tomb of Washington is
by a circling hill road and this
traversed wo were at tho rest
ing place of tho soldier patriot
and statesman tho first in war
frat in peace and first in tho
hearts of his countrymen
Thcro within marblo caskets
behind tho iron grating of tho
heavy gate with tho benedic
tion of this world resting on
them arc tho remains of Georgo
and Mnrtha Washington
Great was their work and a
grateful country remembers
them
I next visited tho Old Tomb
where tho family was first laid
to rest then tho summer houso
between tho mansion and the
river Under this summer
house is a vault and down a
steep and winding path is the
snriiiL hoiiBO in which is a
spring of sparkling water
This is tho Deer Park whicn is
covered with growth of briers
aud heath
From tho spring houso back
bv the summer house I went
to thejMnsion
Tho mansion is nearly ono
hundred feet long and tho mid
dle part wa built by Lawrenco
tho half brother of Georgo
Washington Tho remainder
was built by the General and
named in honor of Admiral
Vernon of tho British Navy
I entered first tho library at
the west end Hero are to bo
Been many of Washingtons
books somo papers in hit own
neat handwriting hisjainous
Farewell Address and a book
that attracted moro attention
than almost any other tho
Bible of Washingtons mother
in which is this record with
others Georgo Washington
Hon of Auguatino and Margaret
Washington was born on tho
11th day of February 1732
about 10 oclock in tho mom-
ing Then fdllowa a record of
his christening nnd baptism
It will bo noticed the record
oads Fob 11 which was old
style Just abovo tho library
and reachod by a rather narrow
flight of stops is tho room in
which Washington died In it
are many relics of Washington
lis compass chair trunk aoc
rotary writing desk nnd book
at which ho kept his ac
counts nnd did his othor wri
tn and -the plain bod on
which ho died The room is
liot largo Indood all tho rooms
Aft
want that spaciousness so mark 1
ed at Arlington but there arc
many rooms Just above this
room is tho room in which two
years later Mrs Washington1
died Tho room is small al-
most compact I may say
There aro spare rooms on
this floor tho third windows
frOIll Which look OUt OVOr tho
Potomac and tho Maryland
hills beyond and still abovo is
a tower not accessible to visi
tors
On tho second floor is tho
room of Ncllio Curtis which
looks over tho north park aud
plantation beyond
In tho hallway on tho first
floor aro tho sword worn by
Washington during tho Revo
lutionary War and tho ono
worn on Stato occasions when
ho was President Hero is nlso
tho great iron key of tho Bas
tille It has a handle like a
ginlct and iron enough in it
to make several locks and keys
as well
But the objects of interest
aro too numerous to mention
aiiuiu nit miiun jainiiuo
portraits knitting and needle
work and many tunny other
things to carry ono back to the
Plantation Period
The kitchen is connected with
tho mansion by a corcred but
open colonadc Here tho visi
tor is senvd with tea and milk
by colored folks who claim to
be ob de family North of
the kitchen is tho butlers room
and west of this the smoke
house then laundry Connect
ed with tho mansion at the cast
end as tho kitchen at tho west
is tho servants room and back
aud to tho west aro various
other rooms and buildings nec
essary to the great plantation
A beautiful lawn is north of
tho mansion which is entered
from tho road leading round
from tho landing West of the
lawn is tho vegetable garden
and east of lawn is tho flower
garden Tho garden is laid off
in sections by box hedges paid
to bo two hundred years old if
I remember correctly and on
tho cast of tho garden is tho
hot houBO with thousands of
varieties of flowers
I will say that Mount Ver
non was purchased by Tho
Mount Vornon Ladies Asso
ciation of tho Union which was
incorporated in 18Tj9
Tho houso and furniture aro
not ns tho Washington family
left them At ono time all tho
furtituro was ruined but the
association has repaired such
as could bo obtained nnd sub
stituted other furniture where
tho old could not bo obtained
Tho rooms are to a great ex
tent i urnished each by a Stato
Tho location is a sort of
zlo as to directions Tho houso
faces nearly south and on that
sido is tho Potomno river flow
ing nearly west So tho mans
ion is on tho north bank in Vir
ginia 1 Tho mansion really has
no back tho south with its great
portico extending tho cntiro
lonth overlooks a lawn next the
door park then tho Patomac
tho south winged by outbuild
ings overlooks a lawn of dog
wood cedar oaks holly and
othor fine trees Near tho but
lers room is a magnificent
mngnolio planted it is said

CRITTENDEN COUNTY KENTUCKY MAR
OUT ON BAIL

Memphis Tonn Feb 27
Tho criminal court room was
taxed to its utmost capacity
this forenoon to hear tho decis
ion of Judgo DuBoso on tho ap
plication for bail in tho case of
Lillio Johnson Only men and
a few colored v omen composed
tho crowd On the opening of
tho court it was found that At
torncy General Peters was not
present and tho judgo announ
ced that he would take up the
misdemeauor docket k
At 930 Miss Lillio John
son appeared accompanied by
her father and sho took a sett
at tho bar Sho had the aij
pcarance ot being -very neifr
vons with twitchings of the
muscles of tho fnco and body
being plainly discernablo
When her veil hal b
turned asido the court read h
ruling in the following words
Tho State vs Alice Mitel
nnd Lillio Johnson
Tho defendants werojointl
indicted charged with murdi
in the first decree On indie
meat thus found defendan
being confined in the count
jail awaiting trial the defoni
ant Johnson applies for bail pi I
a proceeding of habeas corpu i
msmuicu ior mat purpose
Whether she bo entitled t
bail as demanded involves
question of law as well as facl
which must be decided alo
by the court It is provi
in the declaration of rights J
the constitution of our S
that all prisoners shall be
ablo by sufficient suretiM
leas tor capital wrens
tho proof is evident or tho pre
sumption great Tho obvious
meaning of this language is
tint when tho proof is evident
or the presumption great that
tho defendant is guilty of a cap
ital offense bail cannot be al
lowed
But to determine this the ap
plicant for bail must summon
the witnesses and tho court
procoed to fully investigate the
case on tho point ns to whether
tho prof is evident or tho pre
sumption for the burden of
proof is on tho defendant to
show that sho has the constitu
tional right to bo bailed that
tho proof against her is not ov
idont
Witnesses in the caso havo
been summoned and fully ex
amined and without reviewing
tho evidence as presented it is
sufficient to Bay that the court
is clearly of opinion that tho
proof is evident that the defen
dant aided and abetted in the
commission of tho crime with
which sho and her co-defend
ant aro charged a crimo tho
most shockinc nnd malignant
over perpetrated by women
However the court may con
sider on application for bail the
condition of tho defendants
health affected by confinement 3
would endanger the lifo of tho
defendant sho ought to bo bail
ed as tho policy of the law is
not to punish unnecessarily
thoso who aro charged with
crimo beforo trial and convic
tion
It appears that defendant
Johnson has been in precarious 1
health sinco a mero child nnd
for this reason and for this
alono tho court will grant the
prayer of tho petitioner and
admit tho defendant to bail
Tho bond was fixed by tho
court nt 810000 and a mo
ment later her father Mr J
M Johnson loft tho couVt

soon returned with Dr II L
