In the study of living forms from
the protozoa to the mammal and
from the protophytesi to the seed
plants we find certain changes ana
eonditions characteristic of old age
In the human subject the principal
changes which we note are atrophic
and U generative in their nature The
muscles and glands are the parts more
especially involved in senile atrephy
although other soft parts are afft etec

in size of the cellular elements though
without involving any essential change
in their structure The muscular
fibers become small and are said to
take on more uniformity of size while
the spleen and lymphatic glauds un
dergo a remarkable dimunition in
weight and size which increases as age
advances There is also some shrink
ing in volume of the glandular struc
tures of the digestive tract Wl erever
fat has accumulated it gradually
wastes away It is amid that atrophy
begins to take place before degenera
tion commences Pigmentary and
fatty infiltrations of the element are
common as are also calcaeercus in
crustations As an instance of the lo
cation of his fattv defeneration
muscular fibers both voluntary and
involuntary might be mentioned It
is also four in blood vessels especial
ly the terminal arteries of the brain
and to some extent in the nerve cells
and in the parenchyma of glandular
organs Pigmentary infiltration it is
claimed is not so frequently met with
as is fatty infiltration In the pineal
gland in ligaments cartilages ten
dons and the walls of arteries cal
careous deposits are common In the
brain and spinal cord the neuralgia in
creases until it frequently predom
inates over the nervous element and
there is a tendency to the deposition
of amylaceous bodies in these parts
The fatty elements of the brain are
diminished while the water and phos
phorus are ncreasied in quantity
The height and weight of the body
on account of these changes are dimin
ished the bfidv as a whole short-
er and lighter while its individual
parts are also lessened in size with the
exception o the heart and kidneys
The heart 5s a rule is hypertrophied
while the kidneys are at least the size
they were in middle life Changes take
place in the skin rendering it dry and
wrinkled the hair becomes thin and
white the eeth drop out the body
bends
These changes induce a general de
crease in vigor the power of the mus
cles is lessened the combustion going
n in the body is diminished as is
shown by a decrease in the amount of
carbonic acid gas exhaled The vital
capacity of the lungs is decreased al
though there is a quickening of the
respiratory rhythm The pulse rate
rses the secretions are diminished
and the quantity of urine is less Such
briefly stilted are some of the charac
teristics cf old age This period of
life is more liable to certain diseases

prevent them If we could obviate
them even ir a measure how great
would be the benefit and with what re
joicing would the earths inhabitants
hail the discovery especially those
among them nho have begun to enter
the shadows which gather about lifes
evening In the cycle through which
a portion of the material world re
volvesfrom the organic to the inor
ganic from the living to the dead and
back agaip to the living it would ap
pear that as old age approaches the
j material of the animal bodv takes en
more and more the nature of the inor
ganic and becomes more and more
akin to the mineral world When ai
individual tart in life he appears to
be endowed with a certain power or
ability to maintain his status in the
highly organized animal world and to
resist largely the tendency of his tis
sues to become in their chemical na
ture more nearly akin to the mineral
kingdom

paired by age Now if by introduc
ing into the bojy certain agents which
might render the excess of accumulat
ing mineral matter more soluble so
that it could be more easily eliminated
from the body we might get rid of one
element that contributesj largely to

would it not be a feasible and ration

er of resistance with that of those or
ganisms which contain it in abun
dance And also as we now have a
process of treating certain diseased
conditions of different organs of the
body with the products of the corre
sponding organs of animal bodies and
I believe with some success why
could benefit not be derived by admin-
istering the quintessence of the organs
of young and healthy animals to those
whose bodies are beginning to show
the effects of age and in that way fur
nish them artificially with the power
to resist the encroachments of time

The finished gun will be five feet in out
side diameter at the breech and two
feet three inches at the muzzle Its
total length will be a few inches under
50 feet The powder chamber will be
18 inches in diameter by nice feet i
length and will hold for a full charge
over half a ton of brown powder The
projectile will weigh 2370 pounds It
will leave the muzzie with a velocity of
2000 feet per second and at
ty the flying mass will have a striking
energy of C40S4 foot tons or sufficient
to lift G4 of the biggest freight locomo
tives ten feet in the air At the muzzle
the shell would punch a 16 inch hole
through an iron plate over a yard in
thickness and at two miles distance it
would pass through a 27 4nch plate
Notwithstanding its great power Hn
ce Sam will probably never build an
other for while the superiority of this
kind of gun was incontestible eight or
ten years ago it does not compare in
efficiency with ordnance of the modern

Down in the deepest depth of the Grand
canyon of the Colorado is a copper
ledge it is said such as has never been
worked by mortal It has been seen by
many prospectors and explorers and
rock from it has
been secured by em
ploying Indians to swim the Colorado
at favorable times and scale the oppo
site precipice The ore is bare abound
ing in sulphur and gives 20 per cent
copper not an unusual percentage
But the ledge is an enormous one more
than 100 feet in width It is exposed in
vertical depth for fully 600 feet
The ledge lies immediately on the
northern side of the river almost due
north of Ash Fork The fact that it
lies nearly 8000 feet down in the earth
and across a raging torrent- under a
precipice is sufficient reason why it has
not been worked Immense capital is
necessary to work it and the canyons
water power must be harnessed This
capital it is said has now been found

Historic Interest
According to the Runic characters on
a stone tablet found in a Minnesota
swamp adventurous Norsemen pene
trated the American
continent as far as
Minnesota 130 years before Columbus
planted the banner of Castile on the
shore of San Salvador
It is likely that the tablet with this
history making inscription will soon
become the property of Northwestern
university at Evanston Dl Pro
George Curme of the German depart
ment of the college has secured a copy
of the inscription and is impressed
with the idea that it is a genuine his
torical treasure
The stone was found by Norwegian
laborers near Kensington Minn and
bears the date 1362 Historians who
have heard of the strange writings on
the tablet are intensely interested in
the outcome of the present investiga
tion
Dr Henry Wade Rogers president of
the university said to day that the au
thenticity of the inscription had not
been proved but that it would be fully
determined in time If the relic proves
to be genuine it will doubtless become
the property of the university
