FORMER PARIS MINISTER IS -INDICTED
FOR LAND SCHEME
The Louisville Times of Tuesday
evening contained the following:
"On a charge of using the United
States mails to defraud while vice
president of a Texas land company,
the Rev. G. W. Argahrite. pastor of
the Franklin-street Baptist church, i

was arrested hy a Deputy United
States Marshal March 26. He gave
bond in the sum of 2,000 to appear
for trial at Corpus Christi, Tex., May
"The arrest was made on request
of the United States Marshal at Cor
pus Christi, and on the authority of an
indictment returned by a Federal
grand jury in that city charging Mr.
Aigabrite, as vice-president; A. D.
Powers, president; R. Downing, secre
tary, and E. A. Luck, director of pub
licity sales, of the Gulf Coast Immi
gration Company, of Aransas county,
Tex., with setting: ud and oneratine a
scheme to defraud and using the Unit
ed States mails as a means therefor.
"The defendants in the indictment
are charged with entering into an
agreement with Charles G. Johnson,
trustee of certain lands at Rockport,
Aransas county, Texas, to pay him a
percentage of the sales of the land
which had been subdivided into lots
and acre plots. Literature describing
the land as 'exceptionally productive,
having large vineyards and bearing
garden vegetables in abundance,' and
containing statements that Rockport
is situated on a deep water harbor on
which the Government intends to ex
pend large sums, and that the town is
on a railroad, was cicrulated through
the mails, according to the indict
ment, "when," the indictment reads,
m trutli and in fact the said tracts
and parcels of lands were not in culti
vation and not producing grapes, etc'
It is further charged in the indictment
that there is no railroad running into
Rockport and that there is no deep
water harbor in the vicinity of the
town, and that money secured by the
defendants named in the indictment
was not divided as per agreement
with the trustee of the land.
"When Mr. Argabrite was arrested
here and taken before United States
Commissioner John P. Haswell he
said he had no knowledge of the
meth pursued by the company to sell
the property; that he was innocent of
any wrong intention, and that his
name was used by the concern with
out his authority."
Rev. Argabrite was formerly pastor
of the Paris Baptist church, and was
a resident of this city for several
years. He has a number of friends in
this city who will regret to hear of his
