MATADOR MOTLEY COUNTY
Matador Motley CotrxTT May 13
Motley county was organized on February
5 of the present year and this place Mata
dor was chosen as tho permanent county
seat The election of county scat went
off quietly and without friction usually in
cident to the election of county seats
Tho lands in Motley county are very
good the county is somewhat rolling and
broken however but the valleys which are
large are the Very finest The county is
settling rapidly and farming is carried on
to a considerable extent and there never
were fairer prospects for crops than in this
county this year
Tho county commissioners are building a
temporary courthouse at a cost of some
thing over S3000 It will be a very neat lit
tle building
The commissioners have under considera
tion now the building of an JS0O0 Jail
The two school districts in tho county
have petitioned the commissioners court
for an election to vote upon themselves a
special school tax of 20 cents on the 4100
valuation of property This is an indica
tion as to what we think of education out
here
The body of Jeff Vomer who was shot
and killed a few days ago by a man named
McCloud a few miles west of this place in
this county was brought here yesterday
for interment McCloud was arrested and
taken to Fort Worth to be kept safely in
jail there The difficulty grew out of a
gambling debt
CANYON CITY RANDALL COUNTY
Canyon- City May 10 The commis
sioners court of this county Randall
have let a contract for two iron bridges to
cost 53000 to the King iron bridge com
pampany of Cleveland Ohio through the
general agents for Texas Messrs S A
Oliver Bro of Houston
The importance of these structures will
be appreciated when it is considered that
Canyon City is undoubtedly the natural
avenue of communication between the pres
ent terminus of tho Atchison Topeka and
Santa Fe at Panhandle City Washburn on
the Fort Worth and Denver and the great
and fertile plains of Northwest Texas
which the new railway must cross on its
way to El Paso and over which the line of
travel is uninterrupted even by a single
stream of water excepting the Pecos
river nearly midway of the entire route
Canyon City lies between two living
streams which flow during tho entire year
the Palo Daro on the north and the Terra
Blanca on the south about two miles apart
and the new bridges crossing these streams
complete the connections of a great natural
roadway almost as level as a floor from
tho present terminus at Washburn on the
Fort Worth and Denver road to El Paso
to Mexico and to the Pacific coast

Denver Col May 17 For year- it lias
been no secret that the municipal adminis
tration of this city has been tho most cor
rupt on earth The affairs of evcrydepart
lnent with possibly ono exception to
gether with both houses of tho city govern
ment have been under the control of a gang
of men whoso only object in life was
personal proSt Should any electric light
water or railway corporation desire to
secure a valuable franchise the first ques
tion asked them was -how much money
can you put up and it is needless to add
that tho franchise was always granted It
has been charged and as yet never denied
that the price of au alderman or council
man before tho present board was sworn in
was only S1000 upon any subject Efforts
were made on several occasions to change
this state of affairs but the gang had so
tight a hold upon the police and water
forces and the ward primaries that all at
tempts to deioso them were futile
Last April however a revo
lution visited tho city and
the result of the municipal election was
the election of a now sot of officials from
the mayor down to the constables
An investigation was at once commenced
and the financial affairs of the city found to
be in a deplorable condition
It has been discovered that between Jan
uary 1 and April 14 of this year there is a
deficiency of over 19000 in collected liquor
licenses it has also been discovered that
hundreds of saloons and houses of ill famo
have been permitted to run all night with
out licenses they having paid a certain
amount which has never been accounted
for and doubtlessly distributed among tho
members of the lnng Thirty of these
houses have already stated that they were
assessed 1000 per annum
The books of the city treasurers office
havo been kept in a most indifferent man

no record whatever kept of the receipts or
