Anions the Mills
The Boston Commercial Bulletin says
Our manufacturing columns this week
contain the lecord of a large number of
changes iu the cotton mills new mills ad
ditions to plants hitherto silent machinery
starting up etc Tour new cotton mills are
reported additions will bo made to five
plants and three factories that have been
shut down will be started up Tho goods
situation continues favorable and machinery
is ell employed In the woolen manufact
uring iudustry there Ls prosperity This
week wo report seven new mills to be
erected and improvements to be made U
three established plants Judging from the
lecoidofnew mills and of additions the
knit goods and hosiery business must be in
eng good shape
The shoe manufacturing business con
tinues much depressed though there isa
fair amouut of machinery in motion In
some of the small towns in New Hampshire
business is better and some factories that
had been shut down have been started up
There are not many new shoo factories to
report though we learn of several chances
to bo made in the location of New England
linns The glass situation continues to im
prove and prices are being lived up to New
sites are also in demand and new works aro
being built Fight new factories will be
built in diffeteiit sections of the country
Tho record of new paper mills is not a
long one but in view of tho large number
of mills already in the field it is better that
not so many new factories should be built
There is mbre or less building in progress
however and two new pulp and paper mills
were reported this week
Torcign Kenned Sugar
A New York exchange of recent date
says A report has been published to the
effect that Scotch lcfiueis are unable to
cope with the urgent orders for sugars
from America It looks however as
thousjh they might bo able to catch up
pretty soon as the market here is not only
unpropitious but it is understood that some
holders of even the comparatively small
quantities here would bo very glad to re
ceh e orders to send them back Thero is
one grade here grayish in appearance and
of good flavor that seems to be just inside
No 16 D S in color and meets with very
fair favor but tho bright yellows to which
we have before referred do not seem to
take rapidly These goods have been
selling at from 3c down to 3tf c and 3c
and possibly further shadings might be
made to quick customers but there does
not appear to be enough difference in price
as compared with granulated to catch the
consumer for household use and manufact
urers are indifferent Of English granu
lated offerings have been making 441c
quality apparently all right but buyers for
some reason are offish and as none of the
above rates afford a profitable margin im
porters aro not happy
