Qaanali llantre Gossip

General Notes
Yesterday was a quiet day at both the
yards in this city very few transient cattle
being handled A bunch of beef cattle
were driven in for the packery but were
not weighed up last night
The Union stockyards received four double-deck
cars of hogs for the packery at a
late hour last night from Kansas They are
reported as being fine ones
Although some of us will be kept out of
our cash a while longer than we expected to
be those of us who bought beef cattle for
shipment recently by the off market East
for the past few days but by holding our
cattle were adding to their weight at no
loss and will tap the market when we place
them there remarked a prominent trader
jsterday
Four of the most prominent traders have
left the city within the last three days for
various parts of Texas for the purpose of
buying beef cattle to ship to Eastern mar
kets They do not propose to ship next
week or the next three or four weeks per
haps but will buy choice stock and ex
pressed themselves as being thoroughly
enough satisfied that the market would go
up again and that soon to risk their money
on it but a lot of inferior stuff must neces
sarily be worked off the markets at Kansas
City St Louis and Chicago before choice
beef cattle would be in demand Some
shippers they say have learned a lesson
about putting inferior cattle on a beef mar
ket that will be worth dollars to them in
the future
Chicago on Thursday reported Texas cat

Texas cattle received on the Chicago
market from Saturday night last to Tuesday
night numbered 13000 Texas can furnish

Thursday morning Chicago reported 1C
000 cattle including 5000 Texans Market
steady for good cattle and lower on com
mon grades
The Chicago Drovers Journal says -grass
Texans are coming freely and are naturally
making it bad for owners of inferior na
tive cattle This however is the season
for Texas grassers and as far as possible
they should havo the field
The National livestock Reporter of
Thursday says The Texas cattle received
here since 11 a m on Monday amounted to
217 cars Of these ISO were at the yards
this morning The quality was not even so
good as jesterduy Salesmen having the
better class of cattle repoi ted the market
steady but the inferior grades and grassers
generally were sold at reduced prices and
were 10 to 13 cents lower than Monday
The Texas Stockman and Farmer San
Antonio says Meyer Halff of Sau An
tonio held a long string of steers over last
year because he as able and the sign was
not right to sell and now he is glad of it
All things come to those who have time to
wait
Keeuan the Chicago Burlington and
Quincy rustler was only a Methodist elder
before his late trip to the Northwest but
owing to his saintly ways in that pious
country he comes back a full fledged bishop
convincing a tenderfoot that the snow on
the mountains was alkali which was the
immediate cause of his promotion Texas
Stockman and Farmer
The Seymour Sun claims that at least 23
000 pounds of wool have already been
stored there during the past three weeks
and the amount shipped from that place
this season will reach the enormous sum
300000 pounds
Cattle are being moved onto the summer

Warren Institute
The seventh annual session of the War
ren institute closed on yesterday afternoon
The two literary societies of the institute
held a joint meeting in the chapel One of
the interesting features of the evening was
the awarding of handsome medals to Miss
Birdie Chase and Miss Florence Smith two
young ladies who stand as the pioneers of
this institution having for six years been
brave true and faithful workers therein
Fort Worth has reason to be proud of two
such daughters and more than proud of
her whose genius knowledge and skill
aided in their development
The year 1S91 is known as one of the
most successful in the history of this
school The many warm friends and ad
mirers of Mrs Warren its principal will
regret to hear that she has decided to lay
aside her mantle of usefulness and scnd
the next j ear in rest and preparation for
special work in her profession
Mrs Warren as superintendent of vari
ous normal schools throughonl the state
has been a tower of strength to tho many
young teachers of our great state to them
she bids us say I am still with you even
unto the end
As vice president of the state teachers
association of Texas Mrs Warren will con
tinue active in the cause of education
Texas cannot well afford to give up entirely
one who for years has wielded so much in
fluence and power in the great cause of edu
cation She has devoted her life to the up
building of the Fort Worth schools and
Fort Worth feels a just pride in her success
and her recognized genius as a teacher
She was our first superintendent of edu
cation and she it was who planed the
graded system that is to this day carried
out in our schools She placed the public
school system of our city upon its founda
tion and has lived to see how well and
wisely she builded They havo reached a
perfection seldom attained in any city
Every teacher in this state will echo the
sentiment well done thou good and faith

A reporter yesterday met Mr J A Dix
of Kansas City who has just returned from
a trip by private conveyance through the
Panhandle In response to an inquiry as
to what he thought of the outlook he said
The wheat croi is safe The weather is
exactly what is desired and could not have
been ordered better I rode for miles and
miles and notwithstanding the fact that I
have farmed a good portion of my life and
have been through Nebraska and Dakota I
never saw so much wheat before The
whole country is a field of waving wheat
and the farmers are exuberant But there
are there problems in moving that crop
which unless settled speedily may block
trasportation and prevent the fanners from
securing a good price for their grain They
are as follows
1 The labor question Already the farm
ers are beginning to get their threshers in
working order and the question of labor
will soon be staring these people in the
face Many of them do not understand the
situation and in two or three weeks they
will havo a tremendous crop of wheat in
their fields and no labor to harvest it In
fact for the next three weeks the newsp
pers should point to the Panhandle as tl
field for unemployed labor and every effort
should be made to fill that section with la
borers
2 Where will the money come from to
move the crop Of course these farmers
will be unable to market their crop and the
local banks must furnish the money It is
absolutely necessary that the business men
of that section take some kind of steps and
do so immediately to get enough money
from the East to handle this grain and it
will take something like 100000000 to do
this
3 Transportation The only railroad in
that section is the Fort Worth and Denver
and it must make arrangements to handle
the traffic with dispatch If every man in
the Panhandle would move out of his house
and if every building should be turned into
a granary there would not be adequate
storage for the wheat In order to reap the
benefits of the present high price of wheat
before the Nebraska and Dakota yields is
thrown on the market the Panhandle farm
ers must ship their wheat to the great
markets as soon as it is threshed In order
to do this and in order to prevent the wheat
from wasting for lack of storage the Fort
Worth and Denver road must have cars at
every station in order that the farmers can
haul the wheat from the fields to the train
immediately after threshing If the wheat
should pass through the sweat in the
fields where it will be forced to remain
until ii can be put into cars the loss will be
tremendous and the farmers will suffer
With these three problems successfully
solved in the interest of the farmers the
Prnhandle of Texas will be the most pros
perous country under the sun A large
amount of money will be in circulation and
the farmers will grow wealthy
perous
