ERATH COUNTY
ORDER FOR AN ELECTION TO
VOTE ON COUNTY SEAT
Lnlzatlon of the Central Democratic
lab or Erath County The Platform
Adopted Creed Laid Down
Correspondence of the Gazette
Stzphesvhae Txx June 22 There
have been stirring events in Stephenville
for the last few days The county com
missioners court has been in session since
last Monday They have entered an order
to build a new courthouse to be erected on
the old site at a cost not to exceede 75
000 The plans and specifications have iot
yet been adopted and of course the con
tract not let
Qa petition of 200 freeholders from Dub
f court made an order today for an
ion to be held on Tuesday the 23th day
of July 1891 to determine whether or not
the county seat of Erath county shall be re
moved from Stephenville to Dublin in said
county The county seat has been estab
lished in Stephenville ever since Erath was
organized as a county nearly forty years
ago the present courthouse having been
built nearly twenty years ago Stephen
ville is not at all alarmed and feels confi
dent that Dublin cannot obtain a majority
much less a twothirds majority as re
quired by law Stephenville is near the
center of the county Dublin fourteen miles
southwest way to one side of tho county
The central Democratic club of Erath
county completed its organization here last
Friday J 1m Humphries is president As
the principles of its creed it laid down the
following s
1 We maintain that this being a govern
ment of the people founded by tho people
and resting solely urxm their authority all
laws passed for their government should
look to and be for the greatest good to the
Sgteatest number that the high protective
rate tariff levying a tax of from 50 to 100
per cent on about four thousand articles
mostly of consumption and used princi
pally by the poor classes and the largo
mass of our people and for the benefit of
the few and tho rich to the exclusion of the
many s in direct and violent derogation of
thisi principle and should at once be rcme
g vfiSa by the proper legislation reducing the
tariff to strict revenue basis
a
2 Silver being the money of the constitu
tion and of our fathers and having been
used for nearly a hundred years of our ex
istence as a government and with success
and great prosperity in our infancy when
our population was few and our trade small
we see no good reason why we should strike
it down now when we are a full grown and
a great nation prosperous and populous
hty in trade and commerce and able to
e care of ourselves On the contrary
we see a great reason not only for the coin
age of all the gold and silver in our mines
but for a greater volume of currency based
thereon to meet tho increasing demands of
trade and commerce Hence we demand
the free and unlimited coinage of silver and
that silver be at once restored to its wonted
place in the government under tho constitu
j pcrequal with gold and that a sufficient
Volume of legal tender note3 be issued by
the government under the proposed limita
tions to meet the great and growing trade
and business interests of our entire coun
try not less than 40 per capita
a 3 We demand the payment of the na
ijpf tlonal debt according to tho original con
tract as fast as the bonds mature and that
the bonds be cancelled on the payment of
same and we further demand as based
thereon the abolition of the national banks
as banks of issue and that the national
bank act be so amended as to take away the
inhibition to loan money upon real estate
leaving tho matter discretionary with the
banks
4 Believing that all history shows that
any secret political organization is danger
ous to tho liberties of the people we declare
ir unalterable opposition to any and all
secret political organizations whatsoever
5 In tho enumeration of these issues we
do not by any means intend to exclude other
and great principles embraced in tho Demo
cratic creed such as opposition to all ex
travagance peculation and fraud in the
administration of the government in favor
of the autonomy of the states opposition
to the force bill and any interference by
