New Orleans La Nov 8 A recent
massmeeting of citizens in Sabine parish
prohibited the holding in that parish of a
barbecue by those who favor the extension
of the charter of the lottery company The
supporters of the lottery amendment how
ever made a campaign in the neighboring
parish of Vernon and among others ad
vertised one at Sandy creek very closo to
the Sabine line On Sunday a number of
pcoplo from Sabine and Vernon mot at
Good Hope church whero a mass meeting
was hold presided over by seven
ministers of different denominations
and resolutions were adopted declaring that
the proposed barbecue was contrary to
Democratic usages They threatened to
interfere with or stop it On tho day of
the barbecue the ministers put in their ap
pearance followed by a large body of men
many of them from the neighboring parish
of Sabine and most of them armed with
rifles and shotguns For a short time
trouble was threatened for the two factions
stood opposing each other but pcaco was
finally restored by electing one of the
preachers chairman of the meeting and al
lowing the others to address it which they
did denouncing the lottery All the
speeches at the meeting save two were
made by preachers
