Futures Thoso who bought yesterday
expecting a temporary improvement found
an advance here from 4 to points at our
opening which however was soon lost as
there were more sellers than buyers the
encouragement which Liverpool gave of
CI bejgg offset by the indications of an
largo movement at ports and
Turther indications of a larreinterior move
ment as evidenced by the reports from the
thirteen leading towns
Our exchange receives semiweekly re
turns every Wednesday giving the move
ment up to Tuesday night Port receipts
show 45000 bales against 30000 bales last
year while port stocks have reached tli6
largest excess over last year yet recorded
tins season being 1205H0 bales against
104000 bales last year The interior town
movement mentioned above shows 113000
bales against iN > 000 bales last yeor and
120000 bales up to Tuesday of last week
while stocks are 3 i3000 bales against 201
000 bales last year and 334000 bales Tues
day of last week
In other words thirteen of the twenty
eight weekly reported towns gain in four
days in stocks 10000 bales over last week
while port receipts have gained iu the same
time over last year G5000 bales A falling
off in tho movement which is expected by
many cannot assume any considerable pro
portion at this rate until the first or second
week in December Whether they will
then or not remains to be seen
Our stock here is 100000 bales larger
than last year and although sales today
were J700 there was no advance in quota
tions and we are left with the same premi
ums existing last night here Liverpool
closed firm but is expected to be lower to
morrow Our closing is 1 to 2 points lower
than last night
Spots closed firm Sales 9700 bales Quo
tations unchanged
F o b sales 1500 bales Interior less
disposed to meet prices buyers preferring
to confine operations to tho spot which is
well supplied Tho demand is for strict
middling to good middling
Receipts here tomorrow estimated at
14000 bales against 45000 bales at all ports
last year

Manchester Nov IS The Guardian in
its commercial article says Merchants are
very much indisposed to purchase and tho
sales therefore are exceedingly small
Prices in some quarters aro scarcely listed
Elsewhere manufacturers receive orders at
figures which those who are in any degreo
under contract will not obtain Eastern
fabrics are selling in very small bulk
Quotations of most fabrics aro unchanged
from the prices which ruled on Friday
Sales are only practicable where the seller
will accept a decline The demand for
shirtings for bleaching is small There aro
small sales of miscellaneous goods at a
slight decline in prices Yarns are fiat and
in very poor request Prices are 11lCd
lower
Tho Stock Market
New Yobk Nov IS The stock market
today was somewhat moro active than that
of yesterday and displayed decidedly more
strength in the forenoon but the gains
scored durin that timo were generally lost
in the weakness dovelopcd in Richmond and
West Point securities and the consequent
checking of the buying power though no
losses of more than small fractions wero
seen oustide of Richmond and West Point
shares
The market shows evidence of a very
large short interest both here and in Lon
don Tho upward movement however
while not rapid is more steady and general
The market today acted more like a bull
market than it has for some time and many
stocks reached figures which they have not
seen in a long time Gains extended to
Grangers Coalers and Vanderbilts to 2 per
cent and only Richmond and West Point
stocks wero sluggish and when the an
nouncement was made that the failure to
secure a quorum had been made the infer
ence that a dividend would be passed pre
cipitated an attack upon all securities of
that road and common stock reacted from
H to 1 and preferred from TA to 4S
though the latter afterwards recovered
to 51
DOutsido of dealings of these securities
there were no special features of tho trad
ing and whilo the sudden and material de
cline in them caused a setting back of the
regular list a few marked advances were
scored and the market as a whole closed
quiet but firm at something better than
last nights figures
Railroad bonds moro active
Government bonds dull and steady
Statu bonds dull and featureless

Chicaco Ilk Nov 18 The wheat market
did not show that material advanco today
that many traders anticipated and that tho
weather reports seemed to justify That it did
not Is due nerhaps more to the nervous feeling
of uncertainty that generally prevails as to the
probable action of Russia than to the pros
pective heavy receipts
The bad condition of the telegraph wires dur
ing the early part of the day made it Impossi
ble to cbtain full and secure news from the out
side world and as a consequence the market
was very inactive for a time Theopening was
about the same as yesterday ruled easy and
declined XS c then rallied s 5c ruled
steady for a while and then advanced 7ic de
clined a c and closed about the same as
yesterdav to J c lower
Corn The market was easier and governed
by about the same influences as the day before
in which the weather was the most important
The provision trade was fairly active but
prices went off on heavy hog receipts which
were reported to amount to 58000 and prices
went lOo lower
