Our Tnvlntr & stem.
To tho Editor of Tho Post.
Houston, Texas, February 5. In a re
cent letter to Tho Post on tho tax ques
tion, Mr. Georgo L. Porter say;,: "Tho
theory of our government Is equal taxation
that is, every man should pay taxes in
proportion to tho valuo of his property,
Tho citizen owning money, stocks, bonds
or real estate, or any other property ag
gregating In valuo J10.000 should pay ten
limes as much as the citizen owning only
$1000. This is so clear and Just that uo
right-thinking man will undertake to deny
it."
Although this method of raising public
revenuo may seem perfectly clear and Just
to our correspondent. It Is by no means
generally recognized as such. On tho con
trary, tho best wi Iters on tho subject do
not besitato to denounce it as being not
only theoretically vn-ong, but outrageously
unjust in practice. And so It will appear
to any ono who will tako the troublo tq
investigate tho subject for himself, laying
aside all prejudices and opinions based
upon tho authority of others.
Why should the $10,000 man bo taxed ten
times ns heavily as the S1Q00 man? -Bo-cuuso
ho Is better able to pay? That Js
