REVIEW OF MARKETS FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Bloch, Money, Bxcliaiga Bonds, Grain, s~ Cotton, Pnuislons, Etc. ff7-"_ i "New York, Feb. 4.?The market was strong the greater part of the day, but ?arly gains were lost and prices re? ceded until they had made a slight Uet loss on the day. The bank state? ment decrease in surplus o? nbout one und three-quarter million dollars was the ostensible reason tor prices running j oft la the late dealings. London was a purchaser In thie market, and the tone there for American securities ended ?rm. Locally there was a continuance ?ot purchases by large interests noted Sycsterday, and round amounts of short contracts were covered. Confident buy? ing of high-priced stocks, Including New York Central and Pennsylvania, gave strength to tht rest of the list. It was announced that New York Cen? tral was to operate the West Shore Railroad more directly, and lhat a se perate organization would be main? tained only as far as the West Shore board was concerned. Among the other stocks showing conspicuous | Btrength on the rise were Wheeling and Lake Erie preferred. Northwest, Rio Grande and Western preferred, Denver preferred, Canada Southern, C. C. C. sind St. Louis and St. Louis and South? western preferred, which rose from 1 to 2 points. Metropolitan advanced 9 points, of which it retained Third Avenue jumped 11%, of which It lost j 4%. and Consolidated Cl.is and Brook? lyn Union Gas retained 3% and re? spectively of large advances. In ex? planation of the strength in these stocks it was said that Metropolitan was to absorb Third Avenue. This, however, was denied, and the purchases of Metropolitan were said to be based on results expected from the operations of extensions about completed. I'ho strength of the gas stocks was on a continuance of consolidation talk. Great Northern preferred held 7 points of an even greater rise on Intimations of a possible distribution of assets to stockholders. International Silver gained 39? on the day. Lake Erie and Western preferred dropped 6 points on being relegated to the non-dividend paying ranks, hut recovered more than half of the loss. The common stock fhowed sympathetic weakness early, but recovered and ended with a frac? tional advance. The bank statement, which affected sentiment adversely, w; s u surprise in several respects. The Ini rease of sanv! 16,000,000 In the loan account was i:ot due to routine transactions, but was Attributed to the financing of a number of deals of great magnitude In railway projects and industrial combinations. Then, again, extensive credit was said to have bean given to foreign sellers, who were obliged to borrow until the securities reached here from ; broad, Business in bonds during the week was on a normal basis, with a good un? dertone. There were alternate periods of strength and weakness In 11 ?>-? specu 1; tlve issues, which ga?e the market an irregulcr aspect. United Stn es .'i's advanced '( and the IVs registered %. New YorkJ February 4.?A better feel lug prevailed In local cotton circles to? day, but taking Into account a firmer class of, cables than seemed justified, considering our weakness of yesterday and a generally bullish set of advices from Southern points, our market show - ed less strength than anticipated. The opening was steady, with Initial sales at 2 to ? points above the final llg ures of yesterday. On the rise fair out? side Investment orders put in appear? ance and many local shorts, believing the reactionary movement to have practically culminated, sought cover. Thlsvdemand was supplied largely by foreign and Southern representatives with the May and August deliveries re eelvlng by far the greater amount of attention. August moved up to 6.13 and held the advance throughout the earlier portion of the session. The more Important fa tors sustaining the market Included a small movement at both ports and interior towns, pronounced strength In Wall street, most encouraging weekly statement from Kall River cloth mar? kt ts, a c 'erection in the Houston stock from ir.o.ono bales to lin.imo bales, generally light in heavy rains In the cotton bell and the appearance of tin other very cold wave In the wheat belt, which gave promise of extending t<> the cotton icglon.
