REVIEW OF MARKETS FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks, Money, Exchange, Bonds, Grain, Cotton, Provisions, Etc. Now Voik. Feb. 23.?To-doy'a mar? ket ot? dealings In < xcess of a million shares was extremely erratic, and the net results showed honors about even between the bulls and bears. The most significant losses were made in Sugar and the <'.ranger group, Burling' ton figuring for :'.'?_?. The leaders in the other column w. re Tobacco, the Min? neapolis and St. Louis shares and Third Avenue- The market opened strong, with a considerable dentand for foreign account, London taking fully 60,000 shares, over half of which were the Atchisons. Plenty of selling orders ap? peared and prices receded front the opining figures, in some cases sharply A rally ensued with Tobacco, the coalers and the Grangers prominent. Tobacco's strength was accompanied by an annonuncemciit that n settle? ment with opposition concerns was Im? minent, which Involved a consolidation of interests. The action of the Burling? ton directors on the refunding scheme, not fulfilling expectations entertained in some quarters, resulted in a sharp break in that property, which was ac? companied by a simultaneous break in Sugar. A report was circulated widely that a largo issue of new government bonds was impending, and this att< tid? ed a sharp raid. The Information was said to have been received in ti private dispatch, but no continuation, was? ob? tainable. Tobacco fluctuated on tie various reports, which were very sen? sational. It opened up 7 points at 178 and slid off to 172; rallied at ISO, and dosed at 185Vi. One Interpretation "f the deal reported was that the- rival company. Union Tobacco, was to I?1 transferred to the Continental Tobacco t Company. Metropolitan, after dropping 4 points from the opening, rallied 5V4 and (dosed a point off. while Third Avenue lost about half of an eight point rise. Consolidated Gas worked up 4'i nnd then suffered a decided break. Min? neapolis and St. Louis shot up about " points and the second preferred points on rumors that the directors might retire the company's first pre? ferred. Special Btrcngth was shown by American Steel, gaining .'1 points wh >n the general list was crumbling- This was due to the glowing reports of the company's business, which ernanntet! from parties connected with the prop? erty. Sugar was supported in the early dealings, but ended with u 5 point loss. The Coalers averaged over a point up, with Jersey Central excep? tionally jumping 314 on renewed re? ports of progress toward regulating the coal trade. The market closed Irregular, with a weak undertone. The bond market displayed a marked degree of strength, which was nol In? fluenced by the block of sink prices until the close. when some issie s yielded in sympathy- Total sales, $5,550,000. United States 3's declined l?c. in the bid mho. The total sales of stock were 1,011,100 shares. New York. Feb. 23.?Standard Oil closed 4.S84S 4.89V&. NEW YORK stock market.
