REVEIW OF MARKETS
New York. April 3.?The usual ac?
cumulation over Sunday ot "buy at
the market orders caused a buoyant
opening In many stocks. The dealings
?were on a tremendous scale, particular?
ly In the morning, and the total trans?
actions were over a million and a
quarter shares. The most sensational
advances wero among the specialties,
many of which maintained gains t'> the
close, although the railways cased ort".
The legal rate, six per cent., was the
prevailing figure for call money on
good collateral, but the rnnse for the
day was from 5 to S, with the closing
at the lower figure. Although the Lon?
don market was closed because of the
Easter holidays, arbitrage brokers put
out some lines of stock In the expecta?
tion of getting them back cheaper In
London to-morrow. The market
throughout was highly speculative,
with rapid advances and declines. Man?
hattan on tremendous dealings main*
tallied an advance of 5 points. The
stock was apparently controlled by
pool operations, support being extend?
ed on declines, and much realizing ap?
pearing at the high figures.
Federal Steel, on transactions second
only to those of Manhattan, sold early
at the highest figures yet reached, and
then receded sharply, leaving a net loss

and Texas preferred at the same time,

nouncement of the privilege to sub?
scribe for new stock in Brooklyn
Transit, together with an erroneous re?
port of a cash dividend declaration,
caused tho stock to sell up to 136, but it
receded sharply, leaving a net decline
of over two points at the close.
The trading in some half dozen spe?
cialties nearly equalled the dealings in

It developed after the close of business
that a deal had been effected between

The Cotton Markets.
NEW YORK COTTON MARKET.
N<;w York, April 3.?As there were no
English advices on account of Easter
holidays, the local market for cotton
was quite narrow, there being an nli
sence of speculative support from out?
side sources, while room traders were
pessimistic on account of the generally
bearish indications regarding the pro?
gress of the new crop preparations.
The market opened quiet as a dei line
of l to 2 i>olnts; and further declined
5 to 6 points, with scarcely u reaction.
At the best the market was a very
I small one. Sidling was finally checked
by forecasts of moderate receipts for
to-morrow. The weather map was gen?
erally favorable, as were also the gen?
eral run of private advices and gossip
respecting the crop situation. The ex?
ception was in the condition of the
weather in Texas; this was said to
have reached a drought crisis. These
reports, however, failed to stimulate a
speculation or to alarm the bear eon
tlngcnt enough to cause them to cover,
although they did check selling for
short account. Just before the close
there was a little covering which fail?
ed, however, to cause any substantial
rally In the market, which was filially
quiet. 5 to S points net lower.
